Isn't yaoi restricted to anime? Since when has this trend extended to American cartoons?

Since quite a long time ago...in America, it's often referred to as "slash" rather than yaoi. (If Wikipedia can be believed, the first "official" American example of slash/yaoi was in a story in a Star Trek fanzine.)
