Alright, see if I can remember correctly xD
I dont have PS at hand so you'll have to do with vague descriptions

Trace a bloodtrail with the lasso tool and feather the selection (not much, just so that it doesnt have those sharp edges).
Now the tutorial uses two tools:
1) Variations (under Edit>>Adjustments). Here you can adjust the image in small steps. Use this to make the selection more red and dark.
2) History Brush tool. Use this tool to erase parts of the red blood trail just made with variations. Make sure to vary a lot in blood-thickness.

Repeat those two steps a few times so you get some nice trails. And change some layers mode to color burn.
And I think I can make out something with the spongetool and sharpening the trails. I'd say just experiment and see if you can twist it and make it your own
