and i read your reply to me on the thread you started in job offers. i think everything you said there is a good point. especially the last part of your comment because it made me realize something: now i'm starting to realize the importance of the difference between professional artists and people who aren't truly "professionals" because they sell commissions for a very low price (not making serious money to survive) i'm the latter so i charge very little for my commissions (though i've never actually sold one). but the professional artists come to da too and they have a higher standard for what they want to get paid. so i think that's where the problem lies. i've seen other people on da who say "artists need to stop under-charging themselves" but i also see plenty of people charging low prices and i do like to buy low-priced commissions. so both sides are opposed to each other, here on da.
the professionals see the low-priced artists and get irritated because they say "don't charge so little, you give the impression that artists aren't worth much, and make it harder for us pros to sell for a higher price. you give artists a bad reputation, you make us appear to be too demanding. you should raise prices."
the low-priced artists see the professionals and get irritated and say "you demand and expect too much, stop assuming that people want to spend lots of money all on you. people barely want to spend money on us, but here you are, coming along and expecting large amounts of money. and you turn down commissions that we would be happy to take. and we don't want to raise prices because we're afraid hardly anyone will buy."
so each side sees the other side as being too unreasonable. there are two different perspectives.
so maybe there should be a separation on da, two different forum sections for job offers/services. one for pro-level stuff and one for low-priced stuff. (and i know there's a projects forum but the projects forum is more about art trades, requests, collabs, and point commissions, not low-priced money commissions)

Hey! I'm glad you read it and understood.
It's exactly that, there's a separation between hobbyists and professionals...and also a separation between a quick commission or fanart and a professional one (i.e a commission from an artist like J. Scott Campbell or bara-chan or one of those that will cost you 100$-200$ and take them 10 hours to complete). People will charge differently depending on the quality of the work and whether or not they make a living with it. Professional artists are generally worth 25$-50$/hour because of the training and skill it requires to be that good.
Most of us don't even charge that much if you think about it - for example, one of my personal full color character commissions takes me let's say 5 hours+ or so and I'm charging 65$ for that - which nets me only about 10-12$/hour, which isn't great, since I could make that working retail. It's a tough industry.
So when I see that I'm offering character commissions at my quality for 65$ and some other person who has the SAME quality of art and is offering 5$, that drives me nuts, because I know I am going to lose customers AND that other artist COULD be charging that much and could become professional if they wanted to, I guess. And I do understand people being frustrated at the price of commissions, but we also have to look at how long the artist is spending on it and whether they care about being paid enough to survive, as you said.
So...separation of the type of artists could help, yeah, I agree. That way everyone could conduct business separately without getting mad over what probably shouldn't be involved together.

Yeah, it was pretty upsetting. There have been a few immature people on various other sites that have been similarly rude. I think they essentially aren't going anywhere with their lives, so feel they have to insult others to feel better about themselves. lol
