Hi! I'm thinking of self-teaching myself how to paint with watercolours. How should I go about this?Β

Ooh fun! I love watercolors 
But I can definitely give you some pointers about watercolor in general. Since you're just starting out, you'll probably want to use student grade watercolor paints, brushes, and paper. If you decide you really want to invest in painting, it's important to know that there are different types and qualities of paint, brushes, and paper and they can all give you a variety of looks. (Sorry if I ramble too much, I probably know way too much about watercolors for someone my age. XD)Β
So anyway, while you're getting the hang of watercolor, probably go for the more inexpensive supplies. Just know that inexpensive supplies are inexpensive for a reason, and you can't expect to get the same effects that other artists get, which is fine when you're starting out.Β
With watercolor, you're supposed to paint from light to dark. Anything that's white should be left dry and without paint if you want to paint "correctly". (It's considered to be kind of blasphemous by professional watercolorists to use white paint. It's up to you if you want to, and sometimes it can help you fix up mistakes, but it's traditional to just leave the paper white in the light areas. There's lots of way to fix mistakes with watercolor, you just have to know the right tricks.) You slowly build up the values. You'll definitely notice that watercolors can be finicky. If you're trying to layer up a really dark color, you usually have to wait for the painting to dry before you can keep adding paint, otherwise the color can run.Β
It's honestly just a lot of playing around with different techniques and learning how to be patient to get the look that you want. Depends on how serious you want to be with the media and what you're using it for. Just have fun with it and feel free to ask me more questions or for some tips
