Um, just personify them however you want, really. Heterosexual, homosexual, day being female, male (...other...?), night being either, I honestly really don't mind. Whatever you feel most comfortable and most suiting to you will make the story more comfortable and warm, so I don't mind. So long as you stay in the crisp waters of bittersweet and cutely sad and don't get dragged in the tides toward the bog of swampy angst, I really don't mind. Make day snarky, make her sweet, I don't mind at all. So long as there's a cute, sweet, respectful and loving relationship towards each other, I don't mind.
One thing though. Night. Is not. Emo/goth. Please. I don't think you will, but seriously with all of these night/shadow metaphors about goths you never know. I've read some of your stuff, you 're pretty amazing, so I look forever to reading it.
