As a first year in Games Art & Design, your gallery is so inspiring to look at! I've also just started 3D modelling and I have never done anything like it before so I'm struggling a little but I want to improve.

Def keeping you on my watch list for guidance and inspiration

Hi, you've got some amazing art, and you've earned yourself another watcher.
I'm currently studying Games Development in college, with the aim of taking a concept art course in University that would involve pieces like this. I wanted to ask two things:

1) What was your method of learning that got you where you are now?
2) What advice would you have for someone following in your footsteps?

Magnum117 In reply to Canine924 [2017-08-31 02:39:28 +0000 UTC]

Hi there Canine924, thanks for the kind words!

1.) I attended a game design course (which taught me barely anything useful) for 3 years. I followed this up with a diploma in Industrial Design, and this was the course where I learned most of the core technical skills I have today.

2.) If you're interested in concept art, I strongly suggest taking a course that's dedicated to drawing and painting. Industrial design school or a really strong fine art school which emphasises drawing and learning from nature. Overall, you should learn a lot of draughtsmanship/ technical drawing skills and knowledge of perspective, rendering of forms using value and colour. Anatomy of the human body is always good to have (something I'm still struggling with) along with some knowledge of animals. Make sure your foundational art knowledge of perspective, value and anatomy are catered to, wherever you learn it.

Before committing to any school, make sure you know who is teaching, and who the students were. Get in contact with the students/graduates and ask them how much the course actually taught them. There are a lot of 'game design' schools and unis which don't impart any practical knowledge, they're potentially pointless time and money sinks. If the teachers or instructors have worked in a game of film studio before (or are working freelance after instructional hours) with a good body of work, you ought to be alright.

Let me know if you've got any other questions!

No problem and thanks for the compliment!Β
If you don't mind me asking, I'm curious to know your successes as a concept artist over at Malaysia. Has keeping a roof over your head been an issue to you, do you have to work for multiple clients at once to survive especially in Asia. I would also like to know the state of the market here in the SE Asia region from your POV, what are your experiences working here or do you mainly work for non-Asian clients?

I asked this because I'm still 19 and I'm really eager to know how others in the SE AsianΒ region are faring in the industry.Β

Well, I used to work in Singapore at a very small mobile game studio. To be honest I've never actually worked in a Malaysian studio/ art house - as there are at least 2 art outsource places in KL that I know about.

I've only begun freelancing recently, so I can't give you an accurate or reliable idea, at least not yet. Working multiple clients is a must (well, certainly more than one), as I don't have a single client yet that can sustain my present career as a single source of income, so to speak. My clients are mostly small independent teams overseas - mostly from USA and the UK.

As far as I can tell, Singapore has a lot of good opportunities for highly skilled concept designers. You've got Ubisoft, Lucasfilm under Disney, Bandai Namco, there list sort of goes on! That being said, I've yet to break into the larger studios (of any sort) or the AAA game studios (I'm not currently at that level) - so I think my views/ experience are somewhat limited.

Ah that's cool to know and thanks for sharing! Did you have any tutoring in the concept art/illustration/ design field prior to freelancing?
Yeah Singapore has an excellent hub to source for jobs in the concept art field but the ones that really appeal to me is Ubisoft unfortunately. Companies here like Bandai and Koei despite being a popular option don't really resonate with my art style and it isn't the market I'm targeting. I'm more inclined towards the western market and I hoped I can establish as many connection as possible on my overseas internship next year.
Also I've been meaning to ask you how Fusion 360 has been useful or applicable to you in any sort of way so far because the stuff you modelled there can never be used in a game engine unless you bring it over to zbrush to make it Low poly. (I assumed you're working for a game company based on your gallery)

From 2009- 2011 I was at RMIT for a games degree course, which in all honesty didn't help very much. My proper drawing foundation started when I went to the FZD school for one year in 2012. During the 2nd quarter of 2013 I worked for a small mobile game studio in Singapore.Β

Fusion 360 is best used in concept form, at least for me. If you make it to a large film studio client base like Maciej - you'll be sending the CAD files to the film prop dept for 3d printing straight out, as he said. Taking these files and making them low poly is not the best option, probably better to let the fulltime 3d modellers work their magic and make optimised meshes etc. So far 3DCoat has helped me out the most, but I'm not discounting Fusion - it defintiely has clean edges, and hyper precision going for it.

It's good that you know what you want - it's much much better to know the target studio art style and tailor your work to fit their needs etc.

I'm currently pursuing a diploma in game art and design in a local polytechnic right now and I'm facing the same predicament as you were back at RMIT. The stuff they teach there alone couldn't make you competent enough to match up with the caliber out there.
Aw snap! You went to FZD? Did it live up to its praise? Did Your skill elevated like a ton over there? I used to want to study there before but now with platforms like Gumroad and LearnSquared, i don't think I'd be willing to spend a bomb when I can get it way cheaper else where.
Thanks for clarifying with me regarding using Fusion by the way!
