# About me
I'm an amateur 3D modeler currently producing work for BuNine, a consulting group that works closely with David Weber to produce artwork and technical, historical, political, and organizational background for his Honorverse series of books. I'm mostly self-taught in Blender, and can't use paint software at all, so none of my models have textures in the 3D modeling sense of the term. The models can be considered as close to canon as possible, since we get direct feedback on the design from Weber himself. However, some changes are inevitable, and sometimes necessary, and while these are more or less "finished", they should also be thought of as works in progress still.Video of Condor takeoff: youtu.be/fy8e-3lrKGE

Thank you. Which forum? I'm only aware of Weber's forum and the Reddit forum.

Tvtropes. There are a couple dedicated sci-fi threads. Whenever anyone hashes out a sci-fi space ship idea inevitably the Honorverse comes up .

Can you post direct links to any of these threads? Either here or in private message if you'd prefer. I'm kinda interested in what's being said.

Any word on when "House Of Lies" will be published? I've read "Shadow Of Victory," so I'm all caught up with the storyline, and I'm eager to see what the Havenite military uniforms look like - also to read their star system's history.

BuNine's last blog entry from February seems to imply progress is being made?

MaxxQBuNine In reply to OTCPony [2017-04-19 01:08:27 +0000 UTC]
Yes, some progress is being made. A lot of the issue with how long it has taken is the fact that NONE of us are writers as a day job. Therefore, we need to fit writing (and art) in between what we do to make a living. We don't make much (if any) money from the book(s) - we do it because we love the Honorverse, and want to expand on it in ways that David can't without ruining the story. Overall, progress is steady, but slow. We have a meeting coming up in a couple-three months where a good portion of us will be checking on progress - seeing where we are and what needs to be tweaked.
For example, this will be the best time for me to talk with others about what I need to update on my images. There's quite a bit that I have ready, but other stuff needs more work, and frankly, I'm too busy with my day job to be making new images every time I've added something new. Sometime after this meeting - a few weeks or months - I will be deleting most of the images I have already posted and add new ones with much more detail. Or, I may leave the old ones up so people can compare and contrast. I haven't really decided yet.

You haven't stopped producing models have you? I've begun re-reading the whole series and your work has been brilliant in helping me properly visualise everything. I'm back on In Enemy Hands now and I'd love to see some LACs and SD(P)s soon!

Yeah... kinda, sorta. One problem is time, as in, I don't have enough of it. Also, there are some finer points I need to go over with Tom Pope about, but he's been busy himself, with the next Travis book, and the next Companion. I can't say for sure when I'll be getting back to modeling, but I CAN say that when I do, one of the first things I will be doing is updating all the current ships with some new details. I've always tried to maintain that the current ships are still works in progress, and that things were always subject to change, but for the most part, the changes will be in the details and not the overall look.
Since the Star Knight/Fearless is our baseline model, where we work out all the new stuff before adding to other ships, that will most likely be the first ship to get the new stuff. TBH, I'd hoped to have everything from House of Steel done by this point, but life sometimes gets in the way.

I wonder, what is your opinion on the designs of the ships in the Honor Harrington Comics?
I personaly like the artstyle in the comics, but the depictions of the ships are... too different.

MaxxQBuNine In reply to KirikoKiama [2016-02-08 03:49:21 +0000 UTC]
They're okay. They're definitely not canon, but that's something I attribute to artistic license. Obviously, I would prefer if they looked closer to the book descriptions, however, there's that whole "the ships look like sex toys" thing that probably figured into the redesign of the ships so that they DON'T look like sex toys.
The rest of the art, from the two different artists I've seen, is good (aside from the first depictions of Nimitz).
Search for Thomasthecat here on DA. He's got a good cross between the comic design of the ships and canon design (and he's also a collaborator in BuNine with me).

Question, on the ships, are the Boat Bay's always open to space, or do they have "Doors" that cover them during battle. I know they are on the ventral side, and protected by the wedges, just wondering!
Been doing my own take on the Honorverse ships myself, so hope you don't mind if I ask the ocasional question to be more "Correct"

MaxxQBuNine In reply to VALKYRIE013 [2015-09-27 19:16:06 +0000 UTC]
As far as the RMN (and most likely the GSN and RHN), yes, the boat bays are always open. That was one of the first things I asked my higher-ups at BuNine about when I started, as I was trying to figure out how to get doors on them. OTOH, other navies may do it differently. There is circumstantial textev that Ransom's ship had extra side bays for the three or four additional assault shuttles the PNS Tepes was fitted with. Most of it is in the escape prior to landing on Hades.

Not sure. I have a Highlander already made, but there are some changes that are needed, and I haven't been given them yet. Right now, the rest of BuNine are busy with trying to get House of Lies in some sort of shape to be published, and my boss is also working on more finalized energy weapons and missile tube design - everything I've done so far in that respect has basically been placeholders.
On top of that, I've been busy as hell with my new (since August) job, and haven't had much time to do anything.

Would you be allowed/willing to upload ship and missile models to SketchFab ? Apparently, Blender 2.7 and up have a built-in exporter for it, and it would be awesome to be able to zoom and pan and rotate them. You can embed the 3D viewer here on dA , too.

I'll have to see if I'm allowed to. It definitely looks interesting. My biggest worry is that people will be able to download the meshes. These models are not supposed to be anywhere but on my computer and Tom Pope's comp. I guess I can talk to him and see what he thinks of the idea.
I also need to look into it a bit more and see if it can handle some of these meshes - the polycounts go up to a couple-three million on most of them.
Edit: I just checked it out some more, and the free version is limted to models of 50mb or less. I don't have *any* models under 50mb, and most are around 250-450mb. The PRO version allows 200mb or less, so you can see what I'll have to figure out. More than likely, I'll have to rebuild a lot of things in order to reduce the file sizes. I *might* be able to reduce the detail on the pinnaces and cutters that are included with each ship, which would help a lot for reducing the file sizes, as those add almost as many polys by themselves as there is in the entire ship, and some ships have more small craft than others.
I'll have to see what I can do...

MaxxQBuNine In reply to ztlawton [2014-10-13 16:15:12 +0000 UTC]
No worries. I can see about reducing file sizes. There's a lot of unecessary stuff in many of the meshes - mostly with the pinnaces and cutters (interiors and such) - that I can clean up.
Still, it'll be awhile before I get started on any of that.

Not sure. Even though I'm down here in S. Carolina now, working for Weber's former assistant and nanny, I'm not sure I'm going to make it, due to cost and lack of transportation. Even Gena isn't sure she's going, although if she decides she *is*, I will probably also go, since I could ride with her up to N. Carolina.
I'll be there in spirit otherwise, as I was asked to do a special render for the cover of the con program. I know a few of the other BuNine folks will be there, and I think Bill Edwards will be doing a presentation. Andrew Presby won't be there as he is on deployment. Tom Pope will probably be there, since he's been co-writing the Manticore Ascendant series with David and Timothy Zahn, and Joelle Presby I think is going to be there. I'm also not sure about Thomas Marrone.
