Hey, got some interesting stuff... are you studying architecture?

hey

i am. its all looking a bit conceptual at the moment, but im actually normally into more rational architecture...or at least i think i am lol. in truth, id rather direct or illustrate than be an architect full-time.....but i do enjoy architecture a very great deal and would like to get a few real buildings under my belt at sopme stage. small houses especially

Hm thats interesting. There are always times where what you are studying isnt exactly what you think you will end up doing...Ive had some of those thoughts before. But nevertheless, architecture I think is awesome. I graduate soon, so I guess I will be facing some decisions...

Anyways, who are some of your favourite architects?

mm, with me i think its more a case of simply being fed up with my principal tutors this year.... ive always had good tutors in the past, and i dont find it a refreshing change to have terrible ones (an insecure little man who wants to play big dog and an aged, lonely, semi-academic who has never published anything worth a look, who has a myopic fascination with dank alleyways & pretensions of art history...but somehow never manages to check his facts before going off on a tangent about hidden geometry in paintings....). im certain ill snap out of it next academic year

i like carlo scarpa a lot, how about you?

Yea, I know what you mean about having terrible professors. They aren't bad people, but I have one who is really useful and insightful at times, but then he has bad days where his crankyness and bluntless comes out of no where. Sometimes you just got to believe in what you do, no matter what "professionals" tell you!

I like Carlo Scarpa too, its all in the details! I really like Renzo Piano aswell.

piano is good .

..embarassingly, ive started hating leibskind a lot less nowadays.
...i feel i ought to hate him, but annoyingly enough his buildings work quite well...

my tutors arent professionals, thats the trouble. they dont like real buildings, and wont let us do any... ...its frustrating. pff, only a few months left

what was the name of the chap who did the Leca ocean-swimming pool again? i really like some of his earlier FL-W'esque work

dont be embarrased in hating leibeskind! Ive lost all my respect for him...he just built a new extention to a museum in Toronto, and it is terrible. And the building does not work well at all!

I actually got to see him in real life during the opening ceremony...and he is a short little man!

Leca swimming pool is Siza I believe. The reason why I respect Piano is because his projects take the site into consideration. Libeskind just copies and pastes his Jewish musuem everywhere he can!

Are you graduating this year?

Well I do respect him for the Jewish Museum in Berlin...But the museum extention in Toronto the "crystal", his winding staircase is a fire staircase and is enclosed by fire rated doors, making the whole building very disorienting. You dont know what floor and where you are because the stairs are totally closed off. Anyways, I havent been to any of his other buildings, they may be better.

Ive got 1 year and 3 more months to go! About the same time you are done. Do you know what you want to do once you graduate?

mm, quite so..which is why i find it embarassing that i DONT hate him as much as i ought to. i went to visit a couple of his buildings and..annoyingly..they seem to work quite well on theri own terms... ...he's a 1-trick pony & is only really capable of the same piece of work over and over again...but...well. the insides always seem to work quite nicely. annoyingly. i hate the outsides, though...and of course the insides aere only really good for particular kinds of exhibition space.

siza! quite right, it is. went to Porto in january to see some of his work. some of it was very nice! and porto has a nice architecture school, as welll... manchester (where i am) is meant to be a very good school but i cant stand it and it barely seems to work at all. oh well...1 year 4 months to go P
