Correction: And also much better equipped. Simple! They weren't properly organised, and did not plan the invasion properly. They saw Hitler's Blitzkrieg in Poland, Benelux, and France, and they thought: "Hey, let's do that too! We can be just as strong as Germany! But who do we invade? I know! Greece! That'll be simple enough! Let's go immediately!"
Aaaaaandβ¦. As a result for not being properly organised, they messed up. Big time. Mostly because of poor coordination by the ruling generals, and also because many Italian soldiers weren't even that keen on fighting the Greeks that much. Nevertheless, Mussolini had to ask the Germans for help, who charged down through the Balkans (smashing through and destroying Jugoslavia as a result) to help Mussolini in the Greek campaign. As a result, Mussolini managed to get hold of basically all of Greece, for a couple of years or so. By the way, that wasn't the only failed campaign.
