Hey you are so lucky, you can read the Commedia as it was written, I always wonder what it's like in Italian

ahahaha yes I'm Italian, so we study the Commedia at school as English study Shakespeare XD
Well! It was written in 1300, the italian was a little bit different, archaic words, words written in a different way.....I think It's the same for an English reading an old english poem or the Canterbury Tales XD
yes, with the English translation the poem loses part of its athmosphere and refinement....and also figures of speech!!! for example " Per me si va ne la cittΓ dolente,/ per me si va ne l'etterno dolore," in english "Through me the way to the infernal City:/through me the way to eternal sadness", cittΓ dolente-->infernal City: yes, it's the Hell, but "dolente" means "painful" so Dante wants to underline especially the endless pain of this place, in fact he iterates the word in the following verse "etterno dolore" (endless pain)/ "eternal sadness".
Every poem is special in the original language, the translation changes its XD It's the same for English reading the italian version of an english poem
