Any tips for a guy that wants to learn how to paint and become at least decent?

Start by lowering your internal expectations for a painting.
When I start I have a good idea where I am going ...
but with a timer running by the ten minute mark I amΒ
completely focused on making the painting look good
... not on what I think/thought it 'should' look like.
Use big brushes and knives to limit the detail - so you focus on:
big shapes, light v dark, and negative space not on fiddle-y bits.
And find someone you trust to give you feed back.
You can't be an effective judge of your own performance.
eg. I have had pro's come to me and point out problems they
had fixed in their finished paintings (fixed!)
- Like they expected to do it perfectly in one stroke!
Go easy on yourself; copy the greats that inspire you.
"Learning to paint is easy; it's learning when to stop that's hard"
