Everyone knows that parents are embarrassing. It’s a fact of life, like scurvy, or an IRS audit. And 14 out 10 times, your mother is the worst offender. Well, not your mother specifically, I’m sure your mother is very nice, I mean mothers in general. I bring this up not as some grand rant about embarrassing mothers, but rather to provide you with the small consolation that you do not have the most embarrassing mother ever. It might seem like it, but you don’t. I know, because I have met the most embarrassing mother ever, and her poor son John. And just for the record, I am not John. This is not some cry for help, “this happened to a friend of mine” kind of story, no. My mother is bad, I won’t deny that, but John’s mum sets the standard for embarrassing her kids. How, you ask? Well, imagine you’re talking to a girl you like, or boy, I guess, and just as you’re finding your groove, you’re suddenly pantsed, by your own mother. This isn’t a joke. I was there, I saw it happen. And this was just one such incident. So it will come as no surprise that when asked, poor John would vehemently insist that he was a test tube baby and in no way biologically related to his mother. Now this was well and truly before IVF was a thing, so you have to admire his commitment to this line of defence. That kind of a claim took research to pull off, and he always made a pretty compelling argument. I often wonder what must have become of ol’ John. With the sort of quality parenting he received, he probably ended up in politics. Either way, I thank God daily that my mother never took a page from John’s mum. And you should too.
