Might I be cheeky and ask you what are the laws on roadkill animals in Germany? I frequently visit there (since I was a small child), but I've not come across anything salvageable on the roads yet (only been into making my own taxidermy for about 2 year now).

I know birds are generally very protected, but what about deer and other mammals, is it ok to just 'pick them up' like in the UK?

In Germany there are only very few at all "non protected" animals like rats or domestic pigeons, these you can pick up in any case.
All the others, nearly all animals and birds, are under the nature conservation laws. You aren't allowed to keep them at all. There are only a few exceptions like for museums or schools but not for private persons.
Then there is the hunting law that includes many of the protected animals too, also birds of prey although they aren't allowed to be shot. The land is distributed small hunting districts. If you are a licensed hunter in such a district you are allowed to pick up all raodkilled animals that are under the hunting law INSIDE your district and use them for your own purpose. If you aren't a hunter or in a foreign district, you do "puching".
Well, it is very complicated and very stupid because most of our laws are ideologically based and far away from any reality. Unfortunately all the nature conservationists are destroying the hunting laws and try to cancel them to make all ideologically (and highly problematic).
The situation in UK is much more accaptable!!!
