Hey man, we met at MTAC (I was the one who asked you about Kindle covers). Your specific book jackets are fantastic, especially the Lord of the Rings set! Can't wait to see what you're working on next (perhaps more Neil Gaiman?)

I've been trying to figure out what to put on a cover for American Gods. (It seems to be the book I get asked about the most.)
The other thing I've been working on is a five book, illustrated set of the Silmarillion, Hobbit, and three book LOTR set all in matching styles. But I've got some more detail work to do.
Glad you like what I've been doing. Thanks for stopping by.

I was actually thinking Stardust, but both would lend themselves well to this sort of work I think.

Stardust is also in the queue. I just don't want to focus too much on Neil Gaiman when there's a lot of other worthy stuff out there.

Hi, you had given me your card at the Ren Fest on Monday and I just go the chance to check it out. Your work is just wonderful! your steam punk portraits are truly inspired and each tells the story of each character. I can't wait to see what you do next.

Hello Alan,
I was wondering if you could possibly do some sort of tutorial on how to make book covers, I've been scouring the internet for instructions but non of them seem to turn out as spectacular as yours (I especially love the Harry Potter covers)
A response would be greatly appreciated,
Denene

Well, if you want to do them the way I do them...here's a simple lesson.
Step 1: Work for a company that produces leather goods.
Step 2: Convince owner of said company that he needs a laser engraver/cutter. (I didn't do this, he had already wanted one)
Step 3: Learn to use CAD software and Corel in order to make said engraver work.
Step 4: Design patterns on CAD and Corel.
Step 5: Engrave and cut covers. Stain leather, assemble, etc...
Realistically, it's nothing that can't be done by hand. With the right patterns, patience, and tooling, you can do a lot of stuff that's as cool or even better. But, this is the method I use.

ah that explains the perfection of the design lol
what about the assembly? are they all held together with rivets or is there some sewing involved?

Photoguy42 In reply to Deaths-Valentine [2012-01-13 13:22:39 +0000 UTC]
Only rivets. Though I use some double sided tape to anchor the ribbon into the spine.

There's six pieces of leather. Three hard leather pieces and three soft, thin pieces. The thin pieces make up the pockets and the corner hinges while the hard leather has the artwork engraved on it.

what peices of leather are there? is it a thick peice with the design on it on top of some thinner flexible leather and then a pocket layer all riveted together?

Though...people do suck...a lot...

The guys at the door. I used to go there
all the time. And I had never experienced such
shittiness and it has made me not want to go
back. And since I don't drink anymore, another
reason why I stopped going.
Yes, people do suck indeed!!

So, to rate my pictures from 1 star then from those rate to 2, etc.. Yeah, I took way too damn many pictures and so many are so good.. That method is way helpful. Thanks for recommending I do that.

You're welcome. It's a good way to narrow things down when you've got far too much to work with. (trust me, I've been there)
I'm glad you had a good time at the convention.

I have family there. It was my grandpa's 80th birthday also, so there was a big ol shin dig.
The maker's faire? was that the thing going down in henry ford village??

Yeah, it's supposed to be this sat and sun. It's $28 a day or $48 for both days...
I mostly want to go since I doubt there will be a second one. From what I've been hearing, if they don't put through 50k people, they won't do another one...(because it's run by a corporation that thinks just because the one in california does that, all of them should do that)

What exactly is it? Just a workshop that crafters attend and learn new jazz..or is it more of a dress up convention thing??
50k hmm...not a chance with steampunk just getting big around these parts. Tis unfortunate..

Didn't end up going. The $28 a day for a ticket seemed kinda steep to me and after being on the road for two weeks, the last thing I wanted to do was drive....
Remember, we're having a party at the ren faire, opening weekend. It's only a few weeks away...
