Not including my own, I'm personally rather fond of the Gandalf wand.

Sure. The one on the right is great. I love the shape and the concept of the rings. The handle and shaft are well-balanced.

The one on the left is not as well-balanced in my opinion. The shaft feels too thick, especially at the tip, and a wand with that balance will feel heavy and unwieldy. The windings are very nice, though I'd make them thinner, but it's a personal preference more than anything.

The simple shape of the one on the right is good because it is balanced out by the busier windings. The handle-shaft divider is also very nice. If anything, I would suggest experimenting with the shape or texture of the handle, because you have nothing else going on there.

Overall, very nice work.

DaikonReviews [2018-11-20 20:57:12 +0000 UTC]

How do you draw your wands? Do you start with a straight line, and go from there?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PraeclarusWands In reply to DaikonReviews [2018-11-21 01:13:28 +0000 UTC]

I'll start by sketching freehand in pencil. The sketching process is where I decide if the wand will be rotationally symmetrical, whether the shaft will be straight/curvy/some other shape, the proportion between handle and shaft, and other details. When I do the final line art in pen, I'll use a ruler for any straight lines and freehand everything else. Some designs come very easily, only needing one sketch. Other designs, particularly those with a difficult concept, require several sketches and drafts before approaching something I'd actually want to carve.Β

Found this profile looking for Harry Potter wands, never expected this amount of craftsmanship!
All your wands are beautiful!
And I have one question: do you have a personal wand that you favor and if so, what’s it made of? (Wood, core etc.)
Have a wonderful day!

PraeclarusWands In reply to birdythemudwing [2018-07-26 06:22:31 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!
This one is my first, personal wand, made back in 2011:

Β

The actual wood I used was unlabeled, but I believe it is either birch or maple, and is 14 3/4" long. At the time, I had decided on Vine and Veela Hair for the in-universe stats, but I've grown a lot in the past seven years, so another pairing might fit me better today.

Excellent!
I was inspired and carved a wand out of a pine branch in my backyard!
All I used was a pocket knife!
It’s 9 1/2 inches and I decided that the core is dragon heartstring!
I’ll post it to show you!
Thank you!

PraeclarusWands In reply to phantom115cw [2018-07-04 02:50:15 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but it would depend on the wood and the size of the hook so as to not be too fragile.
I've done something hook-like in the past:

fantastic wands! my favorite one is Sirius Black's, which is yours?

PraeclarusWands In reply to Jrydland [2018-06-12 00:33:56 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much. If we're just talking wands from the films, Moody's wand, Luna's wand, and McGonagall's wands are perfect reflections of their respective characters. Design-wise, Rufus Scrimgeour's wand has a beautiful color and a lovely silver accent that ties the whole thing together. Cho's wand is a perfect blend of elegance with a rustic, organic feel. I also really like the "Ash" wand from the Wizarding World parks - the leaf etching on the shaft just goes really well with that handle design.

I don't mind as long as you credit me with a link back to my DA or website (www.praeclaruswands.com).

Another option: I can design a new wand for your character, so you're not limited to choosing from existing wands. If you're interested, here is a sample and more info:

PraeclarusWands In reply to Raubritter [2018-03-21 14:32:31 +0000 UTC]

Yep! I carve each wand by hand from wood. Sometimes, I will incorporate non-wood materials such as leather or crystals for decoration, but the main body of the wand is always wood.

Hello there, I was wondering where you get your wood for your wands.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PraeclarusWands In reply to ForgottenSorcerer [2017-10-26 07:48:55 +0000 UTC]

Hi. I get them from a variety of places. Some common species I can pick up at local hobby/DIY shops like Michaels or Home Depot. But for other, harder to find species, I go to specialty woodworking stores like Woodcraft or Rockler and buy some turning blanks that I have a friend help me cut down to wand-size with a table saw. For still harder to find species, I go online - etsy for shrub species like hazel and rowan, or larger wood shops for foreign species like European pear.Β

Are you looking for something in particular? I am more than happy to help you look.
