*Butts in*

I don't think personality has a gender. We only associate certain things with certain genders because of stereotypes and gender expectations. That is why I'm iffy about the whole "gender-fluid" thing. If you have a penis, you're male. If you have a vagina, you're female. Your personality is unique and has no gender.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

boomjuice In reply to ExplosiveSquid [2013-04-16 13:42:41 +0000 UTC]

Gender identity, personality, and sex are three different things. Your penis or vagina is your sex. Your personality is the way you act and your character traits, among other things. But your gender identity is neither of those. It's what GENDER, not sex, you identify as, if any. You can be a biological male with a female gender identity. In Mac's case, they're a biological female with a gender-fluid identity. Personality has nothing to do with this.

ExplosiveSquid In reply to boomjuice [2013-04-16 14:09:02 +0000 UTC]

If personality has nothing to do with it, how does one define one who is "gender-fluid"? If they're a girl who acts like a boy, they're simply a girl who acts like the stereotypical definition of a male. You cannot have a female identity unless you associate yourself with "feminine" things, which would mean you consider certain things to apply to certain genders, which seems slightly sexist. Nothing is masculine. Nothing is feminine. Who you are on the inside doesn't have a gender as gender is only defined physically. The moment you consider yourself to act and think like a certain gender is the moment you start falling into stereotypes.

It's one thing to be more comfortable as a male or a female, but that does not change who you are (in this case): A female who considers themselves to associate more with male ideas, activities, and beliefs. That's just who you are, and who you are does not have any affect on your gender-- only does your physical makeup. Activities and preferences are not gender-specific.

FYI, your self-righteous definitions mean nothing. While they have additional alternate meanings, gender and sex can be and are used interchangeably depending on the context.

boomjuice In reply to ExplosiveSquid [2013-04-16 14:21:27 +0000 UTC]

Self-righteous definitions? Where'd you get that from? Those are the definitions of sex, gender, and personality. The term self-righteous does not apply to them. I'm trying to be civil here and you're starting to seem a little rude and condescending. Not sure why.

Anyways, on topic. No, gender is not physical. That's sex. Here are some things you might want to read about the difference: [link] [link] [link]
The two terms are not interchangeable, at least not to me. Some people have different opinions.

Here's an excerpt from a page on genderspectrum.org:
Biological/Anatomical Sex. The physical structure of one’s reproductive organs that is used to assign sex at birth. Biological sex is determined by chromosomes (XX for females; XY for males); hormones (estrogen/progesterone for females, testosterone for males); and internal and external genitalia (vulva, clitoris, vagina for assigned females, penis and testicles for assigned males). Given the potential variation in all of these, biological sex must be seen as a spectrum or range of possibilities rather than a binary set of two options.

Gender Identity. One's innermost concept of self as male or female or both or neitherβ€”how individuals perceive themselves and what they call themselves. One’s gender identity can be the same or different than the sex assigned at birth. Individuals are conscious of this between the ages 18 months and 3 years. Most people develop a gender identity that matches their biological sex. For some, however, their gender identity is different from their biological or assigned sex. Some of these individuals choose to socially, hormonally and/or surgically change their sex to more fully match their gender identity.

"The moment you consider yourself to act and think like a certain gender is the moment you start falling into stereotypes." That is true. I'll give you credit for that.

I really don't know what else to say. Personally, I'd call you misinformed, but this is a touchy and opinionated subject and I don't think saying that would be fair. Everyone has their own idea of what sex and gender are, just like everyone has their own preference in ice cream or movie genres.

ExplosiveSquid In reply to boomjuice [2013-04-16 14:51:16 +0000 UTC]

Please note that one of the definitions for gender is in fact sex, and it is used as such in many reputable documents. I did not disagree that it can be defined differently, however using it in such a manner is not incorrect. But I digress.

I do understand what gender identity is, yet how can you consider yourself to be male/female "on the inside" without thinking about the stereotypes that comes with it? As I have come to be aware, you're a male who considers his identity to be that of a female, yet you fail to explain why.

Here's a line from one of the sources you provided me with: "A working definition in use by the World Health Organization for its work is that "'[g]ender' refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women" and that "'masculine' and 'feminine' are gender categories.""

How is that not stereotyping? Do you actually agree that you can apply "feminine" and "masculine" to behavior? That's very sexist. There is no feminine or masculine behavior. That is based on stereotypes. Feel free to try and explain to me why it isn't.

However, I do believe that a person can be more comfortable associating themselves with another gender. It's an unexplainable phenomenon where they feel that they fit more appropriately under a different label or classification. Why not just be yourself, though? You're making the situation black and white on your own. Why not abolish the idea of associating behaviors with gender, and just associate them with the genderless spiritual human existence?

I'd hate to give you the impression that I'm overly opinionated. There would be no point in having this discussion if I were not open to your ideas. Even though I disagree with you, I do not consider you misinformed. Everything we know about the world is subjective. There is no right and wrong, but that's a discussion for another day.

boomjuice In reply to ExplosiveSquid [2013-04-16 15:17:29 +0000 UTC]

You have a strong point, and I'm getting tired of arguing. Besides, as we both said, we have our own opinions.

However:
As I have come to be aware, you're a male who considers his identity to be that of a female, yet you fail to explain why.

I am not a male. I am a female. =Qythe , however, feels they are neither male nor female, but they lean more towards male despite being female biologically.
