Hi <3 Just happened to notice your art, it's really nice! My compliments :3

I also saw that you're a wildlife biologist- that's what I would also like to be when I'm older; do you have an idea as to what would be something that I could do to get into the field? If you don't have the time, that's fine ^^Β

Rapidmare In reply to soliivagant [2014-10-29 13:55:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow yeah. Thank you!
Actually, my advice to you would be to volunteer as much as possible. I dont know where you are in school but there are some great colleges for Wildlife biology. I went to Colorado State University but University of Montana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas A&M, University of Idaho, Humbolt, etc are great schools for it too. Wildlife biology is usually in a Natural Resources Department. My actual degree is in Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology. While in school get involved in clubs like The Wildlife Society and The Society for Conservation Biology and try and do some field positions during the summers. You can find some good ones at this job board:Β wfscjobs.tamu.edu/job-board/
Sometimes it says on these volunteer jobs that you are required to have experience already but don't fret. Just apply, sometimes you can get them anyway!Β
This career is mostly about networking, anyway!Β
I have to warn you though, wildlife biology will never be the road to financial wealth and it is very competitive, but you get paid in cool experiences, a wonderful community and get to work outdoors. I love it. It has brought meaning and passion to my life. I get to track, trap and collar LIVE WOLVES for a living. Actually right now I am on a swift fox trapping job but I will be back to wolves in a few months.
If you have any other questions at all, do not hesitate to ask me! I would love to help you out in any way I can!
Good luck!

I'd really like to go to Cornell University because they offer an array of majors related to Biology, whereas many other colleges only offer 'Biology', but I'm not sure if I could get in- what with the high scores needed and all. Didn't get a perfect score on my SAT, so I wonder if that'll ruin my chances of getting in. Though those universities you've mentioned are ones that I've heard a really good for wildlife biology. Thanks, I'll try to apply to those! I was thinking of interning at the California Wolf Center, which is in my city, but I think it's only available to people over 18, and I won't even be 18 when I start going to university. Maybe if I ask, they might let me intern there for a little bit.Β
That's what my parents are concerned about- they want me to have a financially secure life, so that I won't ever have to worry about money, so they've encouraged me to go into the medical field. I was considering compromising and going into veterinary medicine, but turns out that I have a minor allergy to cats...Yes, I don't want to end up in a lab. I'm probably more suited to an indoors job, but I really couldn't stand having to sit around in a cubicle or in a closed space all day. I want to travel and see all sorts of different things [ when I travel to different countries, the most interesting aspects for me are learning about the culture and the natural surroundings ]. Actually, my dream job is working for National Geographic or a similar company, which would allow me to go all over the world and meet different people and animals. That's why I was considering International Relations, but I've heard you have to have a lot of connections to be successful in that field. Wow, tracking wolves sounds like a lot of fun! That's definitely a dream for me, too.Β

Rapidmare In reply to soliivagant [2014-10-30 03:53:20 +0000 UTC]

Well it is all about what you want. I wanted to work outside, travel, study animals in the wild and make enough money to support myself and possibly a future family. That is what wildlife biology is for me. I do want to stress the difference between biology and wildlife biology. Biology, when applied to animals, is more about lab research and individual captive animals. Wildlife biology is ecology based and focuses on populations of wild animals. It is more of an applicable, conservation effort to maintain the health of wild animals. I used to want to go and work for a zoo or rehabilitation clinic but I discovered I wanted to preserve animals in their natural state more than I wanted to take care of their captive cousins.Β
While being financially stable is nice, that does not mean you need a high paying job to get by. The happiest people on the planet are those who do what they love. I consider myself to be among those people. Whether your passion is veterinary care, engineering, medicine, or biology do what drives your passion and do what you are good at! Don't for a moment close your mind to a career just because it seems competitive or hard. If you want to go to Cornell, you can do it. If you want to go into international relations, go for it! If you want it, work hard for it! Never give up. I have felt so much like a failure in the last 6 years but I struggled through it (rather ungracefully I might add, haha) and I have been moving up in my career so fast its blowing me away.Β
I never got perfect grades, nor did I do that well on my SATs. I am not good at taking tests. It never meant I wasn't intelligent. I still did very well in college. I still get to do things in my career that I never imagined. I am still going to get my Master's degree or maybe even a PhD. My mind just doesn't work well with the standard education system. Β Besides, you can take SATs and such exams over again if you want to.Β
In any case I almost didn't go into biology at all.Β
In fact, my parents wanted me to go into architecture or engineering. Its not that I couldnt do those things. Its not like I wouldnt be fairly happy doing them. But I wouldn't have been true to myself and I wouldn't have been as happy as I am now.Β
My advice to you is, even though you may not know exactly where you want to go, follow your heart.Β
I know it sounds sappy, sorry!Β
In any case, go to a school with a variety of majors you are interested in. Take classes in a variety of those subjects and try them out. Everyone chooses what they live for. I live for the people I love and using my abilities to support a cause which I care about and consider to be the source of a lot of hardship: the decline of the world's ecosystems. Its a long hard journey to finding what you want to live your life for, but if you keep an open mind and a sense of determination you will find it.Β
And hey, it might be a good step in figuring it out to work at that wolf center you mentioned. Maybe working with captive animals is where you want to be! You may even meet some people who lead you on down some road towards your future career.Β
Sorry, I kind of got carried away... wrote you a novel... my bad!
Seriously though, I was in a similar place at one point.
I would love to help you out in any way I can. Ask me questions any time!

soliivagant In reply to Rapidmare [2014-10-31 00:24:00 +0000 UTC]

I'd say I wholeheartedly agree with you on that matter! I mean, yes, there are certain appeals to working for a zoo [ the job might be more secure ], but I think it's much more in the essence of wildlife biology to seeing animals in their natural state, not being bars. I'll have to figure out what's the right balance for me- I honestly wouldn't mind working in a zoo or a conservation center, and I would prefer having a job more like yours, but I'm not sure which is the better option in terms of job security.Β
I believe the same; I would rather be in a job I love than hate every waking moment of my life in a job that I dislike, such as orthodontics or dermatology, as my parents wish for me to go into. When I take a comparison- staring at people's mouths and skin issues, or tracking and studying animals in the wild- it's pretty obvious for me which one I'd rather do. That's great, congratulations! I hope I'll be as successful...it's definitely going to take a lot of work.Β
No problem! I really appreciate it :3 it's actually kind of rare that I ever encounter anyone in the field of wildlife biology; I've only talked to two people on dA who study wildlife; the other person is in Egypt [ I believe ] studying fox populations. I've read plenty of books on animals, but the thing is that it's not really the same as actually going and seeing them for yourself, which is why I find it's a good idea to maybe try to intern at the zoo or at the wolf center, since I live in a suburban area and there isn't much to see in terms of a lot of wildlife here [ rabbits, coyotes, a mouse or two... ].Β

thats true but there is also something about physically using the tools and your hand in combination. traditional can go on the wall without paying to print it out nice. Digital though, has so many capabilities and no clean up or mess.
