Nope, I'm self teaching myself German. The problem was, that in Middle School I was language exempt, which meant I didn't have to take a language that year like everyone else. Then I reached High School and was no longer language exempt, but for some reason they didn't offer German 1, just the more advanced classes. At that point I really, really wanted to learn German. So I take Spanish, but teach myself German on the side. I've been slowly, slowly learning it for about a year and a half. I've only just begun to make actual progress though .

I'm still better at it than Spanish . At the end of last year I seriously considered trying to switch into German 2, but concluded that I'd do terribly just plopping myself in the middle of things ><.

Yeah, I didn't know the word "darum". Thanks a lot! I was looking at the last bit and something just didn't look quite right, lol. I've got an eerily good instinct when it comes to German :3.

Oh, wow, as a native speaker I can't judge it, but a lot of people say that German is one of most difficult languages, so you really have guts to teach it yourself! I wouldn't know where to start, haha

Yeah, I've heard that. Everyone tells me German grammar in particular is a nightmare, lol.

But thanks ;3. I'm just playing it by ear, learning new words and piecing the grammar together as I learn. It helps that I have an Austrian friend here on DA, she's been really helpful ^^.

I also listen to a ton of German music, and I've picked up on a lot of phrases via the music. Like "Ich versteh euch nicht", I learned from Rammstein's song "Ich Will". I also learned that "will" meant "want" because of the song. Also, the power of Schnuffel and his sickening cuteness has introduced me to a bunch of endearing phrases :3.

Music is a good solution, you can also compare English lyrics with German ones, that works too...I think ;D

Oh man, lol. But then again, I have trouble with English grammar and spelling ><. English never seems to sound the way its supposed to 0o.
Yeah, that's what I usually do, and it gives me a chance to really hear it from native speakers without actually talking to a bunch of people, lol. It would be better if a knew a German, or Austrian, in real life though .

Yes, really! It's just funny because I can imagine how excited you are when you learn words like "will" by listening music for example. It's the same with me, when I'm watching series in English

Yeah, I can't wait until I can enroll in an exchange program :3. But they'd probably just ship me over to Spain or something since I take Spanish, lol.

Oh boy was I ever! I get even more excited when I make connections by myself. Like, my and my uncle visited the Austrian Cultural House and we were talking to a bunch of Austrians. One of them told us that a common joke in Austria is that they say Germans are "Mensch ohne Freude", XD. So I was looking at the Rammstein song "Ohne Dich" and it suddenly hit me that it meant "Without You". I had a similar revelation with the song "Morgenstern".

I was thinking about watching the "Axis Powers Hetalia" with German subtitles. That way, if I get confused, I could just look words up. I don't think I'm ready to watch a series with German audio .

Mensch ohne Freunde, geez, that's hilarious. That's kinda insult in German! We usually just say "MOF", the shortcut you know. But that really made me laugh that you know this stuff!! All the more if most Germans don't even know what "mof" means. Haha

When I wasn't that good in English I also watched movies. Usually in English with German sub. But in my opinion, that's bullshit. Because then you're so busy to read the subs that you completely forget about the English voices in the background. So I just watch English movies now with English subs. I usually have no problems to understand the English now but the subs are helping me to understand what they are saying. Sometimes they're talking too fast or mumbling, you know
But in your case I'd go on watching. With German subs or audio...doesn't matter

Hahaha... that's exactly one reason it's so much more beneficial to hang around and learn from actual people, lol.

Yeah, the series I'm watching isn't available with German audio, at least, I don't think so. It's Japanese, lol. So I've watched it with English subs, and the few episodes they have with English dubs. So distraction from the voices won't be a problem :3.

But yeah, I should try and find something to watch with German audio and subs .
