Heyy babyyy, I'm still doing some research on Cavs, but I saw they're prone to a million different health problems and its a bit discouraging. Is it still likely pups would have problems later on, even if the breeder was good?

Ronto In reply to Kittlums [2009-02-03 18:44:29 +0000 UTC]
Respiratory, eye and ear infections are the most likely problems you'll have to deal with.
With a really good breeder, the first two can be improved, and eye and ear infections are quite easy to treat - Pilot gets them in the summer.
All purebred dogs have a whole lot of heath problems, and you do have to choose carefully. I cannot garentee that your Cav wouldn't get hip or respiratory trouble in later life - Usually it is a breed-related ailment that kills purebreds in the end. However, a good breeder should be able to give you a healthy puppy that has a good chance of leading a relatively healthy life.

*nods*
I do know most dogs get problems later on, and I've accepted that, but I just didn't want to get a dog that would grow up sickly, ya know? I'd feel... really bad. But now that you've told me some more things (I've also asked around with people who actually own cavs!), I think, if I choose correctly, it'll be okay. Thank you so much babyyy! :3

Ronto! A few days ago back in Greymouth, we saw this lady... with a puppy.
I was all "Wow, that breed looks familar..." So I asked the lady and she was just all "Oh, shes a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, she's 9 weeks old!" So I was all playing with her and stuff, and aaawww I fell in looooooove! So I wanna know more about them now, do you know any breeders in Auckland or anything like that? And how about temperments and like.... any genetic problems or deseases they're prone to?
Also, blahhh sorry for all the QUESTIONS!

S'okay.
Well, seeing as I'm sick at the moment, I don't really feel up to a whole explanation... The net can tell you much more than I can.
Look up the breed, and I'm sure a whole gaggle of websites will be queuing for your attention.

Salukis and Borzois are quite similar.
-nodnod-
Salukis are a little less proud, but they have fairly same-ish temperaments overall.
They're also BLOODYEXPENSIVE!

I know Salukis tend to follow their instincts, is it true they'd rush off if not on leash? No matter how good they were trained? And I do know a high fence is a must.. hmmm. ):
Ihaveanewaccount! Its for serious art, and commissions. NO fanart at all, or any pokemanz. XD

If they were chasing something, they would rush off. They've got extreemly strong hunting instincts, and will chase birds endlessly. A good recall is SOSO necessary, though they will not necessarily return if they're hot on the chase.
They need very consistent training and lots of practice, as they don't respond well to frustration and can become upset or 'moody' if they're not treated gently and with respect.
A naturally submissive dog, they don't really play well with dogs other than other salukis, greyhounds, poodles and borzois - Basically, they don't like to play rough and tumble.
Because of this, you have to work so that the dog does not also become afraid of people who might try and play with it in this way.

$800 - $1000
Not many pure-bred pups (other than labs) sell for under that.
