Woah! I was searching through JAFAX pictures and recognized your Gon cosplay. I was the Kurapika that kept bothering you and your friend for pictures. It was crazy running into you all the time, but it was a lot of fun; so thanks a ton! If you ever want the pictures with us my friend took, lemme know!

Maybe it wasn't as weird as I thought, after all I've run into multiple cosplayers multiple times, but 3 times Saturday and 3 times Sunday IS a little crazy! Wish I brought an actual camera, my biggest regret out of the entire convention. But I'm glad we can contact each other outside of the convention; it's really nice hearing from you!

I think it was pretty crazy, but it may have been because we were so amazed to see other HxH characters out there, lol. Hmm yeah that is a problem, next time you know to bring a real camera though . I agree it is nice hearing from you as well and it's always nice keeping in contact with people you meet at con's ^^.

It was appalling how little Hunter X Hunter and YuYu Hakusho was present at JAFAX this year! I mean, there was only one piece of HXH merchandise in the entire convention.
And yes! Feel free to talk to me here anytime, I'm very active on this site so it's really no trouble at all!

Indeed, it made me sad, though I'm not surprised YYH didn't have much stuff, most con's don't have anything really for it. And HxH still isn't all that popular here so not sure if there will be much of that around either...
Haha I seen you had a lot of views of your page, feels like your a bit of a celebrity Good to hear I can talk with ya on here, don't get to meet too many HxH fan's after all it's always a good thing!

Kanokawa In reply to RurouniImiko [2012-07-02 06:33:53 +0000 UTC]
Pffft, the pageviews are just a number. I'll always be envious of people with greater, more substantial pageviews, so I won't ever feel "popular enough", I'm certainly not celebrity material though!! Mayyyybe if I start attending more artist alleys...
HXH not being very popular worries me, especially because I really wanna make prints of it so badly! The new anime series and the upcoming movie are the only rays of light that can boost it's awareness at this point. Plus it's gone over an entire season, so it could be dubbed too. I've... never really been so passionate about a series like HXH for a very long time!

Lol yeah I suppose so, I don't have as many views as you do though. I always was amazed at people who do have a lot of them. And from what I seen you're art is great so it deserves it :3.
Yeah it worried me too for a long time, but I've grown to accept it with most shows I like a lot. Maybe the new version and movie will help it, but I doubt it...

Thank you!! Hearing compliments like that makes it all worth the hard work!
Though I'd expect the fact the manga runs in the most popular magazine in Japan would be the source of it's popularity. If the creator wasn't going on so many hiatus' so frequently it could even be better!

RurouniImiko In reply to Kanokawa [2012-07-06 04:13:09 +0000 UTC]
Well the manga has been super popular since it was first out. The original anime was really popular there as well, but still not popular here. I donno still have no hope for people liking it here, they don't really seem to like that type of show, despite it being awesome.

Kanokawa In reply to RurouniImiko [2012-07-06 05:42:46 +0000 UTC]
Pffft, well the anime community label Naruto as ridiculous, Bleach as fuller-abundant, and One Piece... actually One Piece gets a ton of deserved respect here. Not many people in America know the other published series like Reborn, Gintama, Sket Dance, Beelzebub, Toriko, etc etc, so it really isn't that surprising Hunter X Hunter is one of those in the dark (plus the manga stopped being published in stores). It really is a shame! And it's worse ever since my friends got me to cosplay Kurapika because now I like the series even more!
...I think the fact that if you were the only cosplay of so-and-so at a convention, it gives you a weird sense of individuality. Unlike; say, you were one of seven Luffys-- then you don't feel as special. I think because of that, it triggered something for me when I got home and saw a new episode of HXH. Suddenly I'm more excited to know what happens next, and more eager for the next episode. I don't know about you though, since you probably cosplay all the time.

RurouniImiko In reply to Kanokawa [2012-07-06 06:46:57 +0000 UTC]
That is a good point, unless it somehow manages to catch the eye of most of the population it will just be left unnoticed despite if it's good or not. And yes the manga situation doesn't help either...
I agree it is a lot of fun being the only one from a show at a con, but it's also kind of sad when no one knows who you are... I donno, I tend to make friends based on cosplay's I've done in the past. Though it is rather rewarding when people recognize who I am, though it is few and far between with a less known anime. And I don't cosplay too much, just started about a year ago and I've only done Hiei before I started Gon.

Really? You said you made the costume yourself so I assumed you were use to making cosplay because of how well you made it! I have to admit, a little more attention would've made it more fun when I cosplayed a really obscure character; but the people who did recognize me were very fun to talk with. I remember keeping a head count of how many people who came up to me and knew who I was... I think I only counted 14. ._.

RurouniImiko In reply to Kanokawa [2012-07-11 00:01:26 +0000 UTC]
Haha well I do try to pay close attention to detail, that's probably why my cosplay turned out half way decent. It was awesome how many people recognized us though. I think I had around the same count the days I was there as well. It was impressive.

Kanokawa In reply to RurouniImiko [2012-07-11 02:12:06 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad you had some good attention as well, even though I'm sure when you went as Hiei at Youmacon, you might've attracted more. But the way you designed your Gon costume with darker and lower contrast colors made the outfit look so much more real and interesting (unlike my bright colors I wore which made me stand out so much DX). I liked the fishing rod you had too! You and your friend had such great cosplays I wish I took pictures of just the two of you if I brought a better working camera...
It feels good representing a series with not enough attention; especially when we encountered each other not knowing if there was anybody else from the same show. I've mentioned this countless times before, but that was IT. That very moment was when I realized that if I had gone as any other character, it would not have been the same. It was just so crazy.

RurouniImiko In reply to Kanokawa [2012-07-11 05:59:28 +0000 UTC]
Well yeah, YYH is more popular then HxH so I'm bound to get more attention when I cosplay as him. The reason I went with the darker colors with my Gon cosplay is because in the original his clothes were actually around those shades, makes sense for when he's running around in the wilderness and such. The new anime brightens up the colors a lot compared to the old one. Though Kurapika always wore pretty bright colors in the first place. I have no clue what my whole get up looked like, I never took pictures of myself with everything on...
Indeed I love representing a series that doesn't have many people aware of it. And then meeting up with other's dressed for it was a complete shock. It made me and my friend really happy to see someone else And you're right it wouldn't of been the same if you would of been one of the other characters. Still would of been cool, but it was even better that you were someone different then who we were . Made it a lot of fun!!

Haha, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way. I would like to see something like that happen again down the road, though plans for Youmacon have been getting difficult recently... Like the tables are much too expensive; not to mention that both the dealer's hall and artist's alley are moved into the Cobo Hall a ways away from the Hotel site together. Noooot a good business strategy, so I'm gonna have to pass. I'll try to make it to Youmacon though, we'll see.
Have you thought about other cosplays to design? Because I saw your work and you could pull off some amazing stuff! I can't get near a sewing machine without panicking from the pedal thingy (I've tried multiple times and it's not a pretty site ).

RurouniImiko In reply to Kanokawa [2012-07-12 06:07:21 +0000 UTC]
Yes I would as well. I hope you end up making it to Youma, even though business wont be too good for you there :/.
I haven't really thought of any others at the moment. I still need to finish both my Hiei and Gon cosplays before I try and cosplay someone else unless a friend asks me to cosplay from a show I like with them, then I might. I don't find it too hard to make the outfits for the cosplays, the hard part for me is making the props, I can kind of do it, but I mostly concentrate on clothes. Sewing machines aren't too bad once you get use to them :3. You should give it another try sometime, something small.

What my friends and I have been considering is just attending Youmacon without selling artwork, but we really need to save up since hotels are a completely different story than campsites... But I will certainly bring one, maybe two cameras just in case if I do go!
The sewing machine I had my hands on was the one offered in school for basic art classes and I was NOT comfortable with how the pedal worked and having my hands so close to the needle-thing. My Kurapika cosplay was done entirely by my friend, who has been putting together everybody in our group's costume. The only thing I had to worry about were the small props, and I agree with you, putting together those things are really hard! I almost gave up looking for supplies for the chains and rings, but found exactly what I needed last minute. It was still a mess to deal with, so I had to make due with the time I had left.

RurouniImiko In reply to Kanokawa [2012-07-12 06:51:23 +0000 UTC]
Well I hope to see you there :3. Though I would completely understand if you didn't because it is really expensive.
Hmm, yes I can see why that might deter you. Their machines probably weren't the best ones for a beginner to start on. Good thing you have your friend to help you out .
Yeah, that is generally how it goes, I'm usually scrambling at the last moment to try and get things done as well for cosplays.

Thanks! Cosplay is pretty hard to do, it only took me until helping my friend gather supplies to figure that out. I have a much greater appreciation for people who put so much hard work into it now!
Haha, we've been talking so much about Hunter X Hunter, Youmacon, and cosplay that it's making me anxious about this year's Youmacon. Were you thinking of cosplaying Gon again? Or Hiei?

RurouniImiko In reply to Kanokawa [2012-07-13 05:18:57 +0000 UTC]
Cosplay can definatly be hard to do, but so rewarding when you get it right and people compliment you on it !
I have to dress as Gon for Youma because I have a friend who is gonna be Hisoka and that's the only con we'll both be going to together. And I might be Hiei, but I'm not sure on that one.

Kanokawa In reply to RurouniImiko [2012-07-13 07:14:49 +0000 UTC]
I think I remember hearing that from you back at JAFAX, about your friend going as Hisoka. Man, if there was somebody out there who could fill in for Leorio-- it could turn out to be an incredible Youmacon. Even with just the four, I'm already excited!
If you're going to be staying the full three days, you should bring your Hiei cosplay along as well. One of my friends brought three costumes with her and rotated her cosplay throughout the day. I don't think it would hurt, besides, there's bound to be more Yu Yu Hakusho characters out there to photoshoot with (like the guy who does the perfect Kuwabara cosplay there every year (you know the one)).

RurouniImiko In reply to Kanokawa [2012-07-13 08:24:44 +0000 UTC]
Yeah we talked about it some, and my friend who was Killua asked her bf to be Leorio so we'll have him as well . It's going to be a lot of fun, we also have a Kuroro and Illumi who are going to be there as well. The Hisoka really gets into the creepy mode it's awesome!
I think we'll be there for 2 day's... maybe 3 I'm not sure. But my Hiei cosplay is a bit of a pain, especially if I wear the contacts again... those things are evil >.>. There were quite a few YYH characters last year but even so I might just be Gon. He's easier to bring (I don't need to take special care of his wig like I do my Hiei one -.- ), but I might ya never know, depends on if the mood strikes me to do so or not. If you go are you going to be Kurapika the whole time or what?

Kanokawa In reply to RurouniImiko [2012-07-13 17:39:05 +0000 UTC]
The guy from the Phantom Troupe and Illumi too?? Wow, now I feel like I absolutely have to go just for this. By then I should have seen enough HXH to know more of them besides screenshots and brief research from making Kurapika's cosplay (I'm still only at the part right after the Heavens Tournament in the anime).
And since I won't be at artist alley, I should definitely cosplay for Youmacon. So long as nothing happens to the wig (my friend uses it for her Hetalia Pirate England cosplay too), I'll be Kurapika all day, every day. I'll also work on the earring and touch up the chains. And the contacts! Like you said! They're evil and I can't believe how some people act like they can't feel them on... <.< That was one of the reasons I went as Kurapika without the scarlet eyes. The second reason was because he wears contacts over them to hide his eyes, so I guess I lucked out..?
Anyways, yes, If my friends and I do end up going, I'll cosplay as Kurapika like last time. ^^

RurouniImiko In reply to Kanokawa [2012-07-14 02:34:56 +0000 UTC]
Yup Kuroro is the leader of the Spiders/Phantom Troupe. And that's about as far as the new one is so far I think so you're not doing too bad.
Hopefully nothing happens to the wig by then. It would be awesome if you got the whole cosplay done too. Contacts don't hurt too bad it's getting them in that's the hard part... takes me like an hour to put them in. But like you said you could get away with it because he wears contacts to change his eye color anyways.
That would be awesome, and even if I'm cosplaying as Hiei we could still hang out if ya wanted .

My friend who did my cosplay has quite a few contacts that could work, so I don't think I have to worry about getting them if I decide going with scarlet eyes. ^^ The wig is in good hands too, I'm sure. My group will be especially small this time if we do end up going, but I'd be happy to hang out with your group-- the more the merrier! I definitely don't want miss out on this.
