Hello! You seem really cool and I have a sneaking suspicion that you may be the first person in a long while to watch me for a reason other than me giving you a llama. :> Nice to meet you!

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-10 19:01:44 +0000 UTC]

You did give me a lama though...a while ago...its how I found you and your Nos-4-a2 stories, which is the reason I watched. So...in a roundabout way, it kinda was the lama's fault^^.

Its nice to meet you too! I'm trying to do a water give away due to having just hit a milestone number...you've popped in after I announced it, but no one's made any requests, so if you'd like a free mid quality art of anything you can think of, ask away!

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-11 18:48:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, llamas tend to be how I meet most people, but sometimes people will watch as a way of saying “thank you” even when they have no interest in my art, haha. It’s always exciting to meet another fan of Nos-4-a2! I hope I do him justice

Wow, really? Thank you very much! What kinds of things do you like to draw?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-11 19:18:29 +0000 UTC]

Non realism, and characters over backgroungs. But the purpose of the give away was to get practice, and if that's in areas where I normally don't challenge myself that's fine. I have a very hard time finishing my OWN projects, but if its for some one else I feel this sense of duty. So...really anything. I can redraw ocs, do fanart from anything you can link me to a picture of, or if you wanna go weird I can do minimalistic stylization like this,  or mandalas like this.

And so far I think you do Nos-4-a2 pretty well. He's a flexible character, dark and foreboding but not beyond doing silly things...like the entire 'trying to kidnap XR in the sewers' scene in the actual show. Its interesting, but he's one of the few characters I've come to like where shipping him with OC's works just as well as shipping him with cannon characters or crossovers. Maybe because he's a loner, and he doesn't have an 'in group' that the OC would have to worm their way into, so it doesn't end up seeming Mary Sue-ish.

Have you tried doing more doodles and small sketches instead of approaching everything as a full piece? I don’t know if that would help you, but I know I had the same problem with my writing a few years back, and I only improved when I started focusing on finishing just 100 words every day. Before I knew it, I was writing a full page with the same energy I used to need to write a single paragraph!

If you’re looking for requests, though, would you be willing to draw this dude? sta.sh/0d8yhfcmux6 , sta.sh/0nc2sh7rhkq

And thanks regarding Nos! I agree, he allows for a lot of flexibility considering his independence and how many times he was “killed” on screen, plus the fact that his final destruction was never revisited. My version of him is post-redemption-arc, so I’m sure you could tell he’s written very differently

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-11 21:45:42 +0000 UTC]

I definitely prefer redemption Nos, its fun watching him find a comfortable happiness...but also to watch him squirm while he tries to reconcile what he was built for with what he's growing into.

I do sketches sometimes, I don't finish everything, but most of the time if I'm happy with a sketch I then want to line it and colour it. Lining is my favorite part...quick and easy and I'm good at it. Colouring is fun because I get to play with layering and practicing shadows. The sketch part is the part I don't like, finishing the piece is the reward I get for struggling through the sketch. By 'not finishing' my projects, I mean that I get annoyed half way through the sketch and never get back to it.

I can absolutely take a crack at Fletcher, but I'm slow, so it'll take a few days.

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-11 23:43:40 +0000 UTC]

What a great way to put his transformation into words!

Oof, that definitely makes things more difficult, but I think you're taking the right approach by practicing.

And of course there's no rush, you don't have to do it at all, and I can't thank you enough!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-12 04:47:37 +0000 UTC]

He's the perfect villain for a redemption arch too...look at EVERYthing he did in the four show episodes that come after the initial act of hostility he was prompted to by his creator. It was all for food and incidental revenge on those who keep thwarting his attempts to eat.

Star Command seems to be startlingly fast to discount robot lives, considering how sentient the robots in that universe are. Like Nos himself says in a fanfic I'll probably never post, "Why waste resources reforming some one when you can recycle them instead?"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-12 05:58:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! I don’t think robots are even considered citizens. That’s how I explain away Nos-4-a2 being released through a relocation program for reformed villains: since he only ever attacked robots and was otherwise working under the influence of Zurg, he wasn’t charged with doing any permanent, irreversable damage. (Still earned himself permanent “planet arrest” and a lifetime on parole, but if he’d been attacking organics, they really wouldn’t have given half a thought to blowing him up whenever they could.)

I may just be speaking out of a craving for Nos content, but I hope you change your mind about posting that fanfic!

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-12 07:04:34 +0000 UTC]

Its...very cringe. Its a continuation in the future of 'Nos meets Aurora and reforms'. My idea is that their friendship ends up developing to the point where they collect scrap together, and at some point her life winds up in danger and he saves her in public, and people cheer, and he gets a taste for heroics...because he finds it HILARIOUS to see both the fickle nature of people in general, and the Rangers realizing that he could have been a powerful ally all along if they'd just given him a chance instead of persecuting him for how he was built. The whole "You failed ME Rangers...but fret not, I'll play nice...if only to see that bewildered expression on your face" bit. Then...remember than episode where alternate universe versions of the team show up, with an evil Buzz and all that? Aurora tries an experiment that winds up sending them spiraling through the multiverse, landing in other dimensions and trying to work their way back home.

The story is set in an alternate universe where the Nos-4-a2 stayed dead after the wirewolf cannon incident, and follows THIS nos...Nos-4-a2.0, as he jokingly introduces himself, making amends to all the people his this-universe counterpart hurt, confusing them the whole while while being insufferably smug about being reformed...switching from falsely angelic to impishly amused as he tries to hold in his mirth.

The writing is awful, and there's little I can do to fix it. Nos's fluid, spastic movements, the quirky tone of the show, it doesn't translate well into writing. It starts with him rescuing Savvy SLQ and puts her out of character in doing so. Its too fast paced to make sense, and the tone switches back and forth too quickly. Its just...the epitome of 'bad fanfiction'. No real plot, just a series of events the writer wants to see, barely justified and clumsily connected, with some b level 'witty dialogue' thrown in for good measure.

I'll probably write more Nos, but that one...I can barely read it without rolling my eyes.

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-12 18:31:23 +0000 UTC]

Its not that the story idea is bad, its just that the writing is really bad. It would work better as a comic, but I don't draw fast enough to get a project that size out in reasonable quality. I still have my Undertale comic to finish at LEAST chapter one, and then I've got an original idea I want to try and make work.

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-12 19:19:08 +0000 UTC]

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-12 20:52:56 +0000 UTC]

I just did and...bleh, the writing isn't as good as I thought it was while I was doing it, and the art is...super generic. I just...want to close off chapter one, because it's a viable stopping point.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-13 17:26:42 +0000 UTC]

I feel like that’s just natural! You’re always improving, so you’ll always see every flaw in your old work, even if it’s still perfectly entertaining.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-13 21:17:37 +0000 UTC]

The generic art doesn't bother me so much, because I've always been pretty realistic about my art skills, and I can appreciate that its 'my best at the time' while not getting an inflated ego about it. Its the writing in it that bothers me, because I've always been a very good writer, and going back and reading that comic...it was so bad I've decided to redo all the wording, and maybe do a few minor visual tweaks to the existing physical copies. I'm not redrawing everything...each of those pages takes me like five hours...but I'll add or correct a few lines, and change...almost every single line of dialogue. I've already rewritten the prologue. Same story, much better writing.

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-14 01:57:05 +0000 UTC]

Then I’ll hold out for the updates. I look forward to it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-15 07:03:26 +0000 UTC]

Its gonna be several days. Even just redoing the words, I have to take all new pictures, then put them through like three different programs because one doesn't have the fonts I need and one doesn't let me do tilted text...and there's over forty pages to do. I'm not sure if I should do them and dump them all at once, or do them slowly, like five at a time.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-15 16:56:21 +0000 UTC]

Oof, that’s a lot of work. I’m not really one to talk since I go back and edit my stories all the time, but have you considered just letting it be to show your improvement so you can spend time on new things instead?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-15 17:02:40 +0000 UTC]

Yes...but I want this story to be told properly. and when I went back to read it, it was just bad. I'm not redoing all the art, just tweaking a few things digitally, and I know there's several pages where I won't have to re write the dialogue, I just have to use the new font. I have lots of time in my life, I might as well spend it on something slightly productive.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-15 19:32:37 +0000 UTC]

I can’t blame you! I’m rewriting one of my stories from scratch for the fourth time, and I haven’t finished it once. It’s one of the only pieces I’ve written that has multiple chapters – when I finally finish it, it should be my longest!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-15 19:44:13 +0000 UTC]

I think my longest right now is an Undertale Frans peice that's...sort of over fifty pages long? Its an experiment, the same story, twice, once from Frisks point of view and once from Sans's. So the same basic actions and the exact same dialogue...but vastly different motivations and mental gymnastics. Dunno if I ever want to post it anywhere though.

I doing multichapter stuff can be tricky, since you get to a point where its like 'do I want to end it here, or do just one more chapter?'.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-15 20:54:02 +0000 UTC]

That makes me think of what Andrew Stanton said in regards to storytelling: “You’re supposed to start with the punchline of the joke.” It’s always best to start a story knowing how it ends, but in the case of the one I was referencing, Vampirism, I never knew what the stopping point was, only the conflict. I’m experiencing exactly that problem of adding chapters indefinitely with no idea how to give it satisfactory closure. I’m just relying on the inspiration to strike me once I get there!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-15 21:45:53 +0000 UTC]

Its harder in slice-of-life stories, because there's no big conflict to resolve. Life only ends in death and that makes for a sad ending to a story. If the story is about a problem, its over after the problem is solved and maybe some wrap up occurs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-15 22:24:30 +0000 UTC]

With slice-of-life, I feel like it could end pretty naturally when the characters go to bed!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-16 00:45:12 +0000 UTC]

That does work well, but can seem underwhelming if you've already had several days go by in the story.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-17 00:55:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's true. When I do slice of life though, I usually guide it with a really small and inconsequential plot, even finishing chores or having a conversation. It has to be organized somehow, right? If it has no plot at all, the next thing I'd think would be that it's going based on certain blocks of time, and if you go over more than one day, it would highlight the variations between similar blocks, but that would still be hard to find a definitive ending to and I'm not quite sure what that would accomplish for the writer or the reader. Well, I'm so starved for content that plotless slice of life is, honestly, more than I could ever hope for, but I feel like that isn't usually the case. ^u^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scottthespy In reply to ButteredRobot [2018-04-17 01:51:43 +0000 UTC]

I see a lot of people, mostly younger people who haven't read things critically and don't go over their stories once they've written them, come up with a scenario, more than a plot...say, scenario; Nos and two are building a home together. They want to do some characterization, maybe throw in some funny one liners they thought of, have some fluff...just see how these characters act in this setting. And when you're just throwing characters into a setting to see what happens, it can be hard to tell when you're done. This is great for roleplaying, but not cohesive storytelling.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ButteredRobot In reply to Scottthespy [2018-04-18 02:49:40 +0000 UTC]

See, the crazy thing is that just reading that sentence made me rediculously excited. My standards are nonexistent when it comes to that specific case, but unless a person is consumed by that kind of passion, I don’t see how such simple proceedings could even be any fun to write.
