I love all your crochet projects! I am a beginning crocheter and was wondering is it hard to make amigurumi? I saw a book on making them that I was going to get but wasn't sure if it would be too difficult. Thanks and congrats on your DD (:

I think Amigurumi is perfect for beginners, I wish I had learned that early on! It is mostly making circles with single crochets, increases and decreases. You can find lots of free patterns online if you want to try it before you buy it. Let me know if you need any help deciphering the patterns, and happy hooking!

I have always found crocheting fascinating, and amigurumi in particular seldom fails to knock my socks off. Your gallery is a wonder to behold and only feeds my minor obsession. Any tips for getting started for a crocheting virgin?

Do you know anybody that crochets? Once you learn how to chain and make a single crochet, the rest is easy. I learned how to read patterns, it took me about a year (off and on) to get pretty good at it. After following patterns for awhile, I figured out how to make my own shapes free-hand. I suggest Lyons Brand Yarn website for some easy amigurumi patterns to start off, I think they are perfect for learning from! I think I would've learned faster if I had started there.

lol I wish you could show me first hand too! I don't know anyone who crochets, sadly. I wonder if I could find a book at the library? There must be some crocheters around here as I see they sell the hooks at the store. Oh, there's a question: what is up with the different hook sizes?

There are books at the library, maybe even a tutorial video (I know they are sold at craft stores.) If you have a craft store nearby (hobby-lobby, Michaels) they might offer classes, actually, here you can find crochet classes at the library occasionaly!
A bigger hook needs to be used for thicker yarns, tiny hooks for crochet thread. I would start with a nice medium - 6mm. When you look at yarn, there should be a spot on the wrapper that tells you which size hook is recommended. Also, the bigger the hook, the bigger stitch it will make, and vice versa. So, things will work up faster with a bigger hook.

I sell ponchos on occasion, and little purses and mostly penguins of the plushies. I would love to open a shop or do a craft show, but my time is pressed. ( I am a mother, student, and work 9 months a year.) I have so many ideas for things to make! Maybe someday.
