Does it matter that I don't use Mandriva anymore? I currently am on Debian 6.04 and probably going to install Ubuntu 12.xx in it's place soon.

Interesting yes... useful not so much.
Video tutorials tend to have 3 issues - lack of keyboard notation (what key did he hit to do what), lack of good explanation (in this case I had no sound - though if I did it would probably be in a language I don't speak), fuzzy screen (low quality video of a high resolution screen).
I do actually understand the techniques that person used, I just am not good at them.

Personally, I don't like video tutorials as they tend to move too fast for my workflow. I tend to spend more time rewinding and fast forwarding than it's worth.

That's why I've been making all of my tutorials in 'image' format.

It's the best way to make tutorials. Though I'd like to figure a way out how to make an interactive tutorial within the Blender interface.

That would be interesting - maybe using the game engine? (I don't know much about that part of Blender - but it seems fairly capable.)

Siath - Old English vague - Sayer - story teller, or one that shares with others
Linux - The Operating System created by Linus Torvolds, which I happen to use a variant of (Kubuntu 10 - with KDE 4.3x).

Cool. What version of Linux do you use? I am thinking of going from Windows to Linux because I hear that Blender does better in a Linux environment.

Kubuntu (basically Ubuntu - which is Debian based Linux with KDE desktop). I use the latest version.
To get Blender on it you'll have to add Blender's repository (as the version of Blender that Kubuntu includes is always older version). This will also give the nightly updates for Blender (all of the bug fixes will install every 24 hours - )

Right now I'm running Windows XP. Where's a good place to start the conversion process to Linux?

SiathLinux In reply to Second-Perfection [2010-11-29 01:12:18 +0000 UTC]
Two ways to start with Linux.
1. Dedicated computer (ie not your Windows computer) - Download Ubuntu or Kubuntu and burn it to a CD/DVD (depends on version you download), install that onto the dedicated computer - with internet connection, as it will update as soon as it's installed.
2. Dual boot - this is trickier, but I've been doing it for a long time. - First step is to clean up your Windows drive, and defrag the hard drive. Second step, install Ubuntu/Kubuntu using 1/2 of the drive (there is an option during install to resize the Windows partition and create the partitions needed for Linux), a note about this - Windows will NOT be able to see the Linux partitions, however Linux can read and write to the Windows drive).
Either way will get you started, one will allow you more freedom (the dedicated computer), while one will allow you to access all of your Windows files (and can use your Windows partition as storage - which would also allow access you to access those files from Windows).
On the Dual Boot method you will come to a screen which you must choose your operating system during boot up.
On the dedicated computer you will still have a similar screen though you don't need to choose as the latest version (from updates) will already be selected.
Any questions?

I got my new 64-bit system. Is there a tutorial you know of that shows how to set up a dual boot system?

There are a couple - depending on 'which' distribution you choose. (Win7)
Ubuntu/Kubuntu:

Fedora:

Thanks for the tutorials. I'll go with Ubuntu and see how it works out. I guess Ubuntu has a version for a Windows install that sets the dual boot up for you.

Most distros come this a bootloader - it's the bootloader that allows the dual boot - make sure you fully read / understand before you start - not a bad idea to back up EVERYTHING (to a removable media) that you want to keep from Windows - just in case).
That said - with the latest versions of Ubuntu the bootloader works really well, and the install tends to be very easy.

I did at one time (I may actually have a log/pass - but I don't remember them)... I read a lot on several Blender sites...
My nemesis in Blender is rigging - and after I finish a project I'm working on, I'm going to take the time to work out the how to on that one.

When I tried rigging I had a problem with weight painting. I am wondering if there is a way to do it without the weight painting.

Yeah that's where I always get lost... :lost: - oddly enough I think it's the only way to rig in Blender.

Can't you select the individual vertices to go with the joint that you want?

Seems like you should be able to - I'll be learning this whole rigging thing this coming week - I've even downloaded some pre-rigged characters to look at.
