On the outside, Dirk seems like a cold manipulative person who wants nothing to do with his friends personally, and wants to be the mastermind behind everything. But when you start to look closer, you can see he does keep his friends in turmoil, but that's probably because he just hasn't got the time or effort to explain his plans to people - he's the one pulling the strings behind the entire session pretty much: guiding his three friends and himself to victory. He brushes off the Autoresponder's question about 'the Jake thing' because he has to deal with 'the Jane thing' first - he has a lot to do. He is very self-motivated, and will pile other peoples' responsibilities onto himself.
Another reason why he does this may be because they aren't on the same level of understanding as him - he's a lot more intelligent than the other three and always a step above everyone else (he's pretty much the only one who's touched Sburb at this point, after all). He doesn't tell his friends his plans either because if he does, they might not play along. For example, like if your future self came back in time and told you that you'd punch yourself in the face 5 seconds later, you probably wouldn't do it on purpose. He doesn't tell his friends his plans because they might object - they'd actually do it if he slowly edges them into doing it, being an 'unseen hand'. It is manipulative, but it's for the better good.
He can be wrong and miscalculate things sometimes - he upset the Condesce by killing HB. He made a mistake: even the smartest and slyest of people make mistakes sometimes. He is just a kid.
He knows a lot about people in general (something which Rose probably inherited from him); he doesn't use this to hurt people, he uses this skill in everyone's best favour. Using Brobot to train Jake because he knows about Jake's love of fisticuffs, for example.
He is kind and sincere - his customised Pony Pals book he gave to Jane is a good example of this. he doesn't disregard peoples' feelings.
He also appears to be very lonely too. He lives in an apartment in the middle of an ocean without another human in sight; his only 'company' is a cursed doll. He builds robots to fill the void of social interaction. That's why he built the Autoresponder, and also built Sawtooth and Squarewave to rap with. He does his best to please his Internet friends; he said he has made many promises with them which he doesn't intend to break: he's a good friend. He also has built robots for them, to help them (Lil Seb for Jane, Brobot for Jake, AR for all three, but more specifically Roxy). This could also be why his way of showing affection toward Jake isn't quite the conventional one - he shows his affection by beating the shit out of him with a robot. He's socially inept.
