Over the years, Rainbow and Flutters seemed to have a closer relationship, but that final episode definitely made it sound like Rainbow and AJ were an old married couple.

I heard all the episodes including the finale have leaked in Dutch and will leak in English soon. People have been talking about their emotional reaction to what happens, but so far, have avoided spoilers, but I'm doubtful I'll make it to the finale without hearing anything. I'd suggest doing all you can to avoid spoilers and watching the remainder of the show as soon as possible, maybe even stay off some websites til then.

Problem with that is, by the time the episode comes out normally, everyone forgets that I wrote the review, so only 2 people end up reading it.

It was the first Highlander movie I saw in theaters, and also the worst.Β  Wasn't the end of anything, ripped off the ending from The Phantom Menace, and didn't have any of the magic/portal stuff that was in the trailer.Β  Though I heard a direct-to-video sequel came out later that was even worse somehow, but I can't even imagine.Β  They should've just stuck with the first movie, and maybe the TV series, but that's it.

Thanks, and same to you!

Shazam was a fun movie.Β  I'm not quite in the "OMG BEST MOVIE EVER!" camp like a lot of people seem to be, but I enjoyed it.Β  It seems like it was made more directly for kids, so it gets a little too goofy at times, but it's still way better than Man of Steel or Batman v. Superman.

lunchymunchies In reply to Strebiskunk [2019-04-21 17:07:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, personally, I think it's better than every DC superhero movie they made after the Chris Nolan Batman trilogy; because of how successful those were, DC tried to make every movie after that serious, and they're just so bad at it; they're just joyless and boring and have this muted color palette that's visually boring to look at. I don't think I'd describe it as geared more toward kids so much as this one tries to be actually fun to watch 'cause it's y'know, a comic book movie, and it does have some intense, serious moments that actually feel earned. I actually found the comedy funny and found it a refreshing break the dreary slog all the rest of the DC cinematic universe has turned into. I don't know if I'd say I like it as much as the 1st 2 Spider-Man movies, Homecoming, or Dark Knight, but I definitely think it's 1 of the better superhero movies. I would say it's not quite in my top tier, but that's no insult because I still think it's pretty good. I heard that the actors for the cinematic universe's Batman&Superman movies stepped down because the movies were that terrible (which probably explains the ending), so I'm wondering what that's going to mean for the Shazam sequel.

Strebiskunk In reply to lunchymunchies [2019-04-21 17:33:24 +0000 UTC]

As far as the actors stepping down, I have no idea what Ben Affleck's deal is.Β  From his early interviews, it seems like he doesn't understand Batman as a character at all.Β  And the only one of these newer films to get Batman right was Suicide Squad, which was otherwise terrible.Β  As for Henry Cavill, I heard he was fired after having a scheduling conflict for the cameo in Shazam (which is why you don't see his face).

I think my main problem with Shazam is that kid Billy Batson and grown-up Zachary Levi act like two different people most of the time.Β  The kid is mostly quiet and serious and keeps to himself, but then as an adult, he's fast-talking and goofy.Β  The movie is still enjoyable, but I think if there had been more scenes of kid Billy goofing around a bit, it would have sold the idea that they're the same person.Β  But otherwise, yeah, people like the movie because it comes down to just telling a story that makes sense and has actual motivation for the characters.Β  All the stuff with Billy's mom was definitely a punch in the gut.

And since you seem to put the Spider-man movies at the top of your list, what do you think of Into the Spider-verse?Β  Personally, that's my favorite Spider-man movie so far.

lunchymunchies In reply to Strebiskunk [2019-04-21 18:52:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh, gee, I actually haven't seen that one. I hear it's great, but all the compliments I hear are about how great it looks. I have no idea what to think of the writing, and the lack of hearing any compliments about it kind of worries me. Maybe it's not terrible, but the lack of people talking about it tells me it's merely serviceable.

But as for serious emotions, for me, they're (SPOILERS):

1. Sivana's rejection (including his subsequent reaction).

2. His family's reaction to that and what that led to (including the boardroom part right before Sivana reveals his abilities, just the tension between those family members and knowing they probably didn't love and hated him and what his childhood with them must've been like).

3. That woman touching the door, burning away, and screaming. It felt like it was out of despair and fear rather than physical pain which is why it kinda got me emotionally.

4. Sivana throwing his brother out the window (my #1).

5. That guy getting his head bitten off.

6. Sivana's dad becoming a complete coward to save his own life.

These moments actually feel more real and dark and serious than the entirety of each of the other movies after the Chris Nolan Batman ones. I think maybe it's because the movie doesn't do them that much and tries to have other things going for it in addition and gives us a break and doesn't marinate in seriousness that they stick out. It reminds me of how after The Simpsons went to shit, they keep having Homer do these as cartoonishly, over-the-top, asshole-ish things as possible, and yet there's a moment in an early episode where to Marge, he's like "I'm not sure I love you anymore", and that hits way more home than every post-season 8 joke where they're trying to make him as dickish as possible.

As for Billy/Shazam acting like 2 different people, I do slightly feel that way but only kinda because you can justify it by saying the transformation gave him a confidence boost. Like, he had all these cool powers and could impress everyone and become popular and gain material possessions, so it helped him come out of his shell, cut loose, give him the confidence to be himself, and let go of his problems. I like the idea of his hero transformation also being an emotional one, of there being a difference between them because then there's a character arc/growth, and there wouldn't be any if he was goofy before and goofy after, and I do like child Billy being a troubled loner and that story. And Shazam's childlike awkwardness as well as wanting to have fun with the powers helped me connect him with Billy Batson and see Billy Batson. I do get where you're coming from, but I think it makes enough sense that I can forgive it.

This is minor, but a moment I appreciated was when Sivana came into the boardroom and told his brother to shake the 8-ball and read it and he didn't. I feel like a lesser, mediocre movie would've had him actually do it, and it's like "No, that would be fucking stupid."

And yes, I do think it helps that this movie actually makes sense and isn't a clusterfuck of writing. Why is it that these movies in addition to being overly serious also have such sloppiness in the writing? These 2 things shouldn't be inherently connected, but it feels like they are in these movies for some reason, like if they tried to be less serious, it would somehow make them have less fuck ups.

Strebiskunk In reply to lunchymunchies [2019-04-21 20:57:12 +0000 UTC]

I'm kinda the opposite with Spider-verse.Β  Visually, it has a choppy framerate most of the time, which I found distracting.Β  It was actually the writing and likeable characters that made me love the movie.

I see what you mean with the confidence boost.Β  And I also appreciate kid Billy's loner nature.Β  It makes sense for the story.Β  I'm just saying a couple of lighter moments would've helped connect the two versions of him.

Yeah, I was surprised at just how sympathetic Silvana was.Β  A lot of reviews make him out to be a toss-away villain, but I didn't get that impression at all.Β  And his story ties into Billy's very well.Β  Billy felt like he lost his family and had to accept that his foster family loved him.Β  While Silvana grew up with his own family, but they hated him.

Another great moment was Billy fighting with Freddy and setting up the cliche of saying, "Oh, you're just jealous!"Β  But then Freddy responds, "Yeah, no shit!" and then proceeds to tell Billy that he's just using his powers to be a dick.Β  And speaking of which, the "truck destroying" scene makes so much more sense in this movie compared to Man of Steel.Β  In Man of Steel, Clark just had to make a random drunk idiot go outside, but instead he just slumps away and wrecks the guy's truck off-screen.Β  In Shazam, you have 80's style bullies who run into a crippled kid with their truck and then blame HIM for it.Β  So later, you feel like, "Yeah, THAT'S why you destroy their truck."

Yeah, the whole Snyder approach of the early DCEU seems to revolve around a mentality of, "Rah, hardcore!" and that's it.Β  Why does Batman kill people?Β  Because it's cool, shut up.Β  Why is Superman all dark and brooding?Β  Uh, uh, well, he saves people too!Β  But why, when everyone's an asshole, and no one taught him good values?Β  Because he's Jesus, shut up.Β  I mean, Batman also killed people in the Tim Burton movies, but there it was actually justified (mostly), whereas in Dawn of Justice, he's just a sociopath with no self control.
