# About me

It's a tad cliche to say I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon. So I will say that my real journey as an artist began when I was about 13. I started drawing cartoons with some semblance of a cohesive system. I also drew my first piece of artwork (based on Giger's Alien), that got people's attention.

When I was about five years old, my father brought home our first computer. He introduced my brother and I to it. I started playing with it that very night. They haven't gotten me off the damn thing since.

Once I discovered Photoshop and Illustrator, the game was changed. I learned everything I could in school about them, then began to explore things on my own. I taught the two programs at a technical college in California for two years, where I think I learned more as a teacher than ten years as a student could have taught me.

The bottom line about me is that I am a ham. I love attention. Not super interested in becoming famous, but my eventual goal is to create artwork that appeals to audiences on a mass scale. By mass scale I'm thinking, for example, people with eyes. It's an impossible goal, but it'll keep me constantly striving to improve, and positive feedback will keep me motivated to keep moving forward.

Don't give up on it!  I'm still learning after nearly a year of experimenting with it, so keep at it.

I pick it up every now and again. Then it crashes my computer and I put back down.

I think I need some kind of tutorial that's a little better than the ones I've found on youtube. Or an actual tutor.

Try Hal Tenny's   tutorial.  I think you will find it very useful.

Hey, some good work in here. Especially the faces, which I avoid like the plague - way too difficult.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sux2BeMe In reply to JamesLedgerConcepts [2014-01-27 09:03:10 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. Since my silly injury working on my last studio piece, I've gone back to digital...and getting faces right there (without entering the uncanny valley) is darned difficult. I know because my next couple pieces were going to have them...and they're soooo tough to get right.

You however do amazing backgrounds...which I don't really avoid like the plague. I'm just not all that skilled at them. Yet.

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to Sux2BeMe [2014-02-03 12:43:48 +0000 UTC]

thanks Sux - backgrounds I like doing, a lot, so I constantly go over the same procedure which makes it easier and easier each time, though not THAT easy...yet.
The demand for character/people in images is much higher than just backgrounds, so you are headed in the right direction if you plan to get paid work at some time. Yes, faces really are the toughest subject matter I think, but you are well on your way.

My gf (who wears glasses - natch) didn't believe me when I told her the same thing...until I showed her this folder that I've had for quite a while. But, I've only really felt this way about glasses since always.
