Hello Hans, just wanted to tell you how much I love your photography, especially all the shoots you did w. our mutual friend, Marita. The Sorceress shoot w. the in camera fire effects are stunning. Really amazing work. Marita tells me you're into old horror films, which is something we have in common. We should chat sometime about it.
Again, really incredible gallery you have.

Thank you sooo much, Dave! Feedback from an artist like yourself means a lot to me! I've been admiring your work for much longer than I've actually known your name (been snooping around Marita's page), as I'm a huge movie-geek and a fan of your creations
Oh, and I'm really glad you like the pictures! The last series with Marita was actually supposed to be a test, kind of a "proof of concept"-thing, but it worked out so well that we just kept on shooting.
Haha, yeah I love horror films! Been trying to recreate some typical "scenes" from horror movies in a couple of my photo shoots earlier

Thank you very much! I've actually seen and admired your gallery before I met Marita. Funny how she's the one that finally got us talking.
That shoot you 2 did was really something, loved all the in-cam. effects you did. How did you do all the tiny glowing lights, really impressive.
Those horror film shoots are very cool, I think those were the ones that made me check out your gallery in the first place. So which are some of your fav. horror films?

I'm honored! It's obviously a pretty small world after all, at least when it comes to the internet.
Thanks! We were quite happy with the results too, and the whole thing was just supposed to be a test shoot really. Kind of a "proof of concept"-thingy, but it worked out so well we just kept shooting and trying out new ideas. Glad you liked it! I got a few similar ideas on how to make it look even better, and I hope Marita is up for a second shoot in a few weeks time.
Ah..horror movies! I gotta say old-school stuff then. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy newer movies too, like REC, Silent Hill and some of the SAW-series. When doing the horror photos I took a lot of inspiration from movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and that kind of gritty films. But to be honest, when I'm going to watch a scary movie I prefer the old stuff. John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my absolute favorites. And not a CGI monster in sight! I prefer the intricate models and animatronics over fake looking CGI beasts any day. It's just something about computer generated monsters that just look "off" in some way. I don't think it's scary when you can tell that it's not real. Reflections, blood and other disgusting things look so much more convincing when they use actual models or motorized puppets.
And I hate the way all CGI-monsters have ridiculously smooth movement in everything they do. It looks out of place. But put some kind of advanced motor into one of your sculptures and you'd probably scare me to death...

You're very welcome. Yes it is.
Looking forward to the next shoot you guys do and I think Marita is always up for doing that, then again, I've only known for a few months. She seems to love being in front of the camera which is great. She's so photogenic.
Ah..... yes! You can't go wrong with the old school horror films and they are also my favorites. Hey, you're a Silent Hill fan, cool. One of my favorite films I worked on largely because I was always a fan of the game. When my boss told me that he was going to do it, I practically demanded to head up all the creature work on it and he ended up letting me do that. We didn't get any credit in the film, but everyone in town knew that we did it and got a lot of praise for it.
You've got some great choices there, and Carpenter is also one of my favs. especially the Thing. We were going to work on an H.P. Lovecraft film that Guilliermo Del Toro was going to direct (his pet project that he's been working on since before Hellboy 1). It was a story called "At the Mountains of Madness" and the original story of "the Thing" was inspired by this story. We did a few Maquettes of some shape-shifting alien creatures that looked pretty damn cool, but alas the studio backed out of doing it at the last minute. If you're a fan of "The Thing" then you would have loved this, it would have been "The Thing" on a huge scale.
Unfortunately, CGI has taken over much of the industry and it's become very difficult to find work doing practical stuff anymore. I'm actually training to do the digital design end of the creature stuff so as not to have to find a normal job.
I prefer the practical creatures as well as do all of my fellow workers in the industry, but you have to adjust to the times and the practical creatures are unfortunately not going to be around for much longer. I'm hoping that if more creature effects guys get into the digital end of things then maybe we can help make then look a little more realistic.
Wow, this was a long message. I guess we should chat through notes or emails which you can send me anytime.
Must talk more old school horror.
