Hey Transport Guild, I was looking at your engines pics of the southern railway and something came to mind to me about the railway. I noticed people talk about the Rivalry between LMS, LNER and GWR, as well as speaking very fondly of them, but almost never about the SR. So I was just wondering why?

Hiya
The rivalry between the LMS, LNER and GWR came down to the fact that those three battled against each other to serve the northern cities of Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and onward to Scotland. GWR and LMS had routes to Birmingham and Liverpool they competed against each other with, while the LMS and LNER fought for domination of the premier Scottish routes.
The only real competition between the Southern Railway and the other companies was with the GWR on services to the southwest of England to places like Exeter and Plymouth. The SR had routes via Salisbury to resort towns such as Padstow, Bude and Ilfracombe, while GWR had its routes via Bristol and Westbury to its own resorts in Torquay and those in southern Cornwall.
The SR's main remit, however, was largely to the south of London to places like Bournemouth, Southampton, Portsmouth and on ferry trains to Dover. Due to the limited number of railways and lack of space to build them the SR could operate to the south and southeast largely uncontested. In the instances where some of the other companies did make an appearance, like the LMS on the route from Bath to Bournemouth, this was part of a joint-railway agreement known as the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, were SR and LMS locomotives were allowed access rights along this section of route. North of Bath it became solely LMS towards the Midlands while beyond Bournemouth it was strong SR territory.
The SR is largely forgotten because it didn't really make an impact. The GWR was the legendary route of Brunel while the LMS boasted its vast freight operations and the gruff image of powering British Industry, and the LNER was epitomized by its streamlined express trains. The SR on the other hand, being confined largely to the south of England, was very much out of sight, out of mind. Indeed it pioneered Electric Multiple Units on London suburban services, and had a fleet of useful streamlined steam engines on the popular resort trains, but it simply didn't have the same cultural impact as the other railway companies.
