I am in the process of making bases to streamline the process, BUT I don't want to just churn them out like the same drawing in 3 different colours either. I know it works for other adopts artists and I'm not judging it, it's just not my style.

I'm seeing it as an extension of commissions but in reverse. Like selling a painting I already made instead of waiting for someone to pay me to make it. It seems there's a community of people who are willing to spend money on things in my brain so why not let them!

Yeah, I can understand that. I feel like using bases doesn't matter so much with adopts as people usually then draw their own art or commission art of the character, but at the same time it can start to get a little stiff. I've seen a lot that use the same faces and body shapes as well as poses, and that I'm not too keen on. Depends on the artist I suppose. Your posing of figures is so fluid and dynamic, that's a definite plus for you, but at the same time not all adopts make enough money to cover the cost of that. So I suppose it depends on if people are willing to spend extra for something completely from scratch, of if they'd rather the use of bases, as well as if you're making enough from them to cover the cost of you making them.

That's exactly how it is, it's been a really good thing for a lot of artists, especially those like you who are really good at the creative aspect of designing characters. I'd love to make some myself but I feel like I'd get too attached to the design xD

I'm paying attention to what they sell for vs time I put into them, but it's a fun thing to do between commissions and if I make a little back that's also cool.

As for the bases bit, I'm content to change hand poses or whatever to fit what I'm designing. The Archer was done on a base I made from an earlier drawing but I redid part of her arm so she could hold the arrow up (the original had hand on hip) so it's flexible. (The fact I draw quick helps I think)

I have my own worlds on the go so I just can't let those go, like my valkyries and my reapers etc...  I couldn't do a valkyrie adopt it would feel wrong. But each of the adopt series's I seem to have started it unique and new, and I have my ideas about them which I'm adding visually but I don't want to impose too much so people still have a chance to write what they want. So it's easier to let go knowing that's the purpose of it.

Still won't sell anyone a Valkyrie or a Reaper XD

I'm glad it's working out well for you! It does seem like a good idea for in between commissions.

Ahh, that sounds like a really good idea. Do you draw separate appendages on separate layers (arms on a different layer to the torso) or just keep it all on the one? And yes, drawing quick does help a lot!

I can totally understand that, especially when it's an entire kind of 'species' or whatnot that you've created.

in my base files I have each colour (outline, any blush etc) on separate layers cos I just made the bases with the colours I did on the drawing I traced. But as each drawing has unique colours it makes it easier to recolour if I keep it colour based. Then I merge them with the new colours, erase the limb/head and redraw it like normal.

I actually do all my work on one layer anyway. I get muddled up if I use too many. I only make a new layer if I'm about to add a dramatic detail I might not like but when I like it I merge it and keep going. I'm very traditional art that way XD

The Valkyries and Reapers are for a comic I'm drawing in my free time so it would feel weird to give other people characters from that world for their own stories.

Ahh, okay. That seems like an easier way to do it than maintaining multiple layers.

I have the same problem, I always end up with too many layers and drawing on the wrong ones xD

Ah the comic is kinda a silly YA type thing with a girl who died and becomes a Grim Reaper and discovers a whole world beyond death. It sounds kinda dark but it's mostly light hearted (imo but I'm writing it I'm not the best judge). The Valkyries are part of that as they collect the spirits of those who died in battle, they're a bit crazy. So far I've got a lot of world but it's solidifying what I'm actually turning into story that's hard. But it'll work out somehow.

It's a project I dip in and out of. Unlike conventional writing a lot of comics is the time it takes to draw the art. So I'm at the point where I have basic scripts but slogging through the art. It's fun though but it takes it's time. I do it on the side though so I go through time when I do a lot and time when it's the last thing on the list.

Oh cool. If you haven't heard of it yet, webtoons is a pretty cool webcomic site. I read a lot of stuff on there and have heard a lot of good things from creators, maybe something you could look into?

The last comic I liked but made some fundemental mistakes such as starting doing it without an actual proper script or plan, I think I had ideas for the first 10 pages not the whole story, and I started it as a once a week thing and I just don't work like that. Now if I were to do the story I'd do it like the new one and release it in short story batches and work on it when I want to around everything else I make, once a week was way too stressful.
