# About me

My name is Peri...!

I spent nine long years on Deviantart here to show the world my art and improve it, as well as to help show off other's art, help them improve, and hopefully bring a smile to a face or two.
I have made the decision to leave DeviantArt behind.

Oh, okay then... Well, got any tips for an amateur like me?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ThePancakey In reply to chaoticson [2017-08-18 16:25:35 +0000 UTC]

I've got plenty of tips and tricks, sure...But I think a word of advice that has been the most important to me for this past year during my artistic journey is to not strive for perfection...
It's to just get things done.
Not everything has to be perfect. You just have to make something. Who cares if you think it's bad? It's part of the artistic journey. Every mistake you make now is one that you will learn from.
Don't be scared to make mistakes. Make hundreds. Thousands. You will figure it all out in time.

When you are unhappy with something, remind yourself that it's fine. It's part of the journey.
Never throw anything away. Start again if you really hate it that much. Keep going. Something will turn out.
You will get better. You will improve. Sometimes fast, and you notice, sometimes slow. That's okay. Keep going.

I'm totally open for showing little 'tricks of the trade' if you're confused on how to make something look a certain way, need color advice, etc...But that's really my most important advice to give.
I do traditional sketch/ink/copic/watercolor and use Paint Tool Sai for digital, so if you ever need help with that stuff, I'm here!

chaoticson In reply to ThePancakey [2017-08-18 16:35:28 +0000 UTC]

Wow... Thanks.

Now that you mention it, how do you make something "glow" in paint tool sai?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ThePancakey In reply to chaoticson [2017-08-18 17:01:05 +0000 UTC]

Of course! We're all in this art thing together.
Β

I've done a few glowing things in the past. I usually mess around with "overlay" or "luminosity" layers and play with their opacity.
Generally you can slap on a really saturated, vibrant color, then blur it around the edges. Play with opacity and you start to have something!
I usually build up a few layers so one can be a muted, soft glow that expands really far, and the more vibrant glow stays closer to the source.
A bit hard to explain in words, but there are plenty of tutorials where you can screw around and figure out what to do.
I try to keep the opacity below 70% on things like that because otherwise a lot of it can overwhelm the senses and erase detail.

If you look up "glow tutorial paint tool sai" on google you're bound to find plenty that will help you.

Here's two simple ones:

orig08.deviantart.net/f2e6/f/2…
orig13.deviantart.net/1f20/f/2…

Overlays are actually REALLY helpful for 'setting a mood' and giving an atmosphere to a drawing. Do you use them at all?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chaoticson In reply to ThePancakey [2017-08-18 17:14:32 +0000 UTC]

Not really, since most of my drawings aren't really scenes or otherwise I don't find them necessary.

By overlay, you mean like in Steven Universe, where character's color schemeΒ changeΒ depending on location?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ThePancakey In reply to chaoticson [2017-08-18 17:25:46 +0000 UTC]

Yes! It's a type of layer in Sai. You can have multiple layers, luminosity, overlay, etc...

They became a total game changer to me. I always use them as my finishing touch to add a bit of lighting to something I otherwise hadn't done too much to,
though they are super easy to make too overwhelming. Opacity is important on these babies.

Here's a little example of my work with just the use of one overlay!
It's a slight difference but it really does change how one can perceive the picture...
Also, they're super fun to play with.

I really hadn't played around with any layers other than normal and multiply until about 2 years ago.
I was a fool.

Here's my favorite and super simple overlay tutorial that got me hooked:

I said I could help, but didn't promise to be too kid friendly! Haha.

Thank you for your contributions to the Soviet Russian Stockpile of Llamas (SRSL). Your contribution will be noted as potentially life-saving in the case of your disapproval of our government system.
Here, we will continue to provide 10% of all earnings to the peasants, keeping them under the impression that they have received 40%.
We thank you once again for your generous donation.

Oh! Llama badges were introduced to dA years ago as an April Fool's thing,
but since everyone loved them so much they ended up staying.

You can earn badges from participating in certain events or by being given them.
Badges are displayed on the upper right part of your profile (by the 'edit page') button.
You can change which ones you want to show off.

Llamas badges you can give freely, and also get! If you get enough of them,
your badge will change into a different type of llama.

For me, they're just kind of a friendly little "hello!" to other Deviants.
Nothing super important or special, but they're cute and fun!

Β
...And welcome to DeviantArt!
