I actually am just starting to play, and am building a Tau army of my own, complete with some Imperial Guard axuillaries.

Sounds cool. You thinking about posting pictures of finished piece on here? If so, I know of a couple of groups that would love to place them in their galleries (and help promote your account in the process).
What colors you thinking of painting them?
If you ever want any advice on how to play the Tau, just ask. I've got some suggestions here or there. (Or you can read here: [link] ! I've got my opinions and suggestions in the article. It's kinda lengthy, but I think I did a fairly thorough explanation on just about everything in the codex.)

I've already settled on a color scheme for the basic infantry and the vehicles. The armor is Caliban green, with the clothing a Tau orange and the sept color is purple. The squad leaders have a purple section on their shoulder plates to distinguish them. The battlesuits are a bit different, though. When I bought my first battlesuit, I cracked a joke about painting it "Gundam Style", and actually went through with it, using the color scheme of the orginal Gundam from 1978. So I'm going to stick with red, white, and blue for the other battlesuits. Another issue I have is one of my friends from the local Games Workshop gave me some of his old Tau and Kroot that he never used since he sold most of his Tau army. The Kroot are red, and that's fine, but he also gave me a Shadowsun commander, a drone sniper team, and several sheild drones, all painted red and black. I really don't want to paint over any of those, because his paint job is really well done, an the paint has formed its own thick layer that will show up if I try to paint over it.
Thanks for the offer of help, I appreciate that a whole lot. A lot of guys at the Games Workshop are also either building their own armies, or getting rid of their own to make room for something new, so we have this really tight net of support for each other, and it's awesome to know I can add more people to that net.
