Oh, I'm working on my cosplay, too.... I really have to work hard though, since I'll already be wearing it next month. Mami Tomoe from Puella Magi.
Apart from that, I'm doing just fine, I guess. I try to get back to my art, I sew, I work for school... I'm pretty scared, it's only about 30 more days of school. o_o||

The shell is entirely made out of paper-maché.
I used an old workout ball (it had to be old because I had to destroy it in a later step) to get the form right.
I had the ball blown up and then put a layer of newspaper on it. Following were many layers of paper-maché. I think around 4 oder 5 at first.
When these were dried (always let one layer dry before adding the next) I added the thorns. I made them out of the inner part of toilet paper rolls wich I cut up and the rolled together to get the form right. Then I glued them onto the shell. Following that I added some paper-maché directly at the thorns to ensure that they stick and then added another 2 layers of paper-maché on the whole thing.
After all the paper-maché dried (might take a few days) I took the shell of the workout ball. Sadly I had to cut the ball up at that point as I got quite a lot of paper-maché onto the ball and it stuck to the shell. After that I spray painted the whole thing.
To finish of I added two strings on two sides. I added them by stapeling them to the shell. They were positioned above my breat und right at my waist. This way I could wear the strings under my kimono and nobody would see how the shell was holding.
This shell is not water resistant. Well it survives some rain but not a dive into a pool. For extra water safety you could spray it with some water resitancy spray to be sure it survives rain.
