I'm really happy you like my work! We got one big thing in common, namely, we both pay a lot of attention to details. But what makes our styles different (besides other minor things) is the way of using a pencil. Your line is very smooth and polished while mine is, I'd say, raw What do you think?

Yes you're right. My main concerns are shadowing;, contrast, accuracy and details..And I make extensive use of "stumps" and other shading skills.

What are those other shading skills?

I mainly use stumps which I made myself with blotting paper, a kneaded eraser and a cotton swab, and , for large areas, a paper tissue or a cotton pad.

Whoah, thank you for this great reply! I didn't even know about stumps before you told me. Now, when I know what stumps are made of, I can try them out by myself. I love learning such stuff. Have you got any further advices?

It's the same for me. I did all my drawings in my youth without knowing these skills.
I discovered them a few years ago when I started drawing again.
What has changed the most for me is the kneaded eraser and now I almost never use a classic rubber any more ...
I am much softer with the paper.

In your youth? So how old are you?
What kind the bristol you use for drawing? I prefer thick (at least 170 g/m^3) and as smooth as possible. I also noticed you don't you use H+ pencils. Is that because you just replaced them by the stumps?

62.
I currently use 224g (french "C à grain" paper or bristol) but I don't hesitate to use 170 or 180 g , it's thick enough.
I personally think that hard pencils are too "traumatic"for the paper and difficult to erase. I prefer a well sharpened B pencil with the help of the kneaded eraser to obtain thin lines and/or pale grey tones.

62? That explains your mature and nuanced style.
224g bristol - that sounds encouragingly! Yor're totally right saying H+ pencils are "traumatic" for the paper (only when it is badly pointed) - especially when it comes to thick (170g +) bristol on even but not completely stiff pad (eg. a cardboard). I use this feature to draw detailed hair but it works with brunettes only. If you use pencil sharpener and then a nail file to chamfer the tip then H+ pencils won't be "traumatic" anymore. The nail file is a great tool for sharpening pencils made fully of graphite as well. Did you try it out or maybe you have your own method for such things?

I personnaly use a razor blade to refine the mine of my pencils. Sandpaper is a possible solution too. On the other hand, I use sandpaper to regenerate my "stumps", made with rolled blotting paper.
