My parents still have the Greater Sulfur Crested Cockatoo and the Bare Eyed Cockatoo. They made for great references in art class and collegeΒ Β ...not to mention pretty much the only references I had for most of my projects... Β

Ah, that's great! I'm glad they're still alive and kicking...or pecking. Whatever they prefer I guess. And, well, you're certainly great at drawing them, so I guess it payed off!

Yeah, the big birds live a veeeeery long time. Up to 80 years for the GSCC and up to 50 years for the BEC. When I was little I had Budgies (a blue one named Blue Boy or BB for short and a green one named Emmy short for Emerald) and then later Cockatiels (my fave one I named Bibs since it looked like it had a yellow bib on and he was hand tamed and trained so I could actually "play" with him) It's a shame I can't have pets in my apartment as I would love to get Budgies or Cockatiels again.

Oh wow, I forgot how long birds actually live. They can be life-long companions! That's one of the many reasons they're my favourites. I also had two Budgies when I was around seven or eight years old (give or take), and they were named Line and Professor. Line was a funny girl while Professor was the meek younger brother (they were siblings). I loved them, but we had to give them away for a reason I can't quite remember.
Your birdies sound lovely! I hope you can have pets in the future someday. I'm about to move out from my current apartment to a new one, and I really hope I'll be allowed to have Budgies there.

It's funny, with dogs generally the larger the breed the shorter the lifespan and the smaller the breed the longer (though with so many cross breeds I'm not sure how accurate that is anymore) With birds it's the opposite. Budgies are about 5-10 years and Cockatiels (which are a little bigger) are up to 20 years and so on. I miss cuddling with my Cockatiels and having them play with my hair while they were on my shoulder. I just remembered how my mom thought it was funny that when I came home from school, they would start up chirping (even when I didn't have school, they still knew what time it was and would start up)

Ah yes, that's why people tend to count in 'Dog Years'. I personally love doggies as well (my foster parents had a dog called Mads who died when he was...uh, 18? 19? Or even 20? I can't quite remember the exact number, but I do remember he was born before I was).
I've never actually cuddled with birds before, now that I think about it. I've only ever had Line (pronounced 'Liiine', it's a Danish name) and Professor, and the two of them didn't like cuddling (I don't think they were tame, to be honest, but I still loved them. They were perfect just the way they were).

There is a big difference between hand tamed and hand trained. It's best to have both. One means that they will sit on your finger/hand but not necessarily be too friendly for pets or giving them treats. The other is they will accept food from your hand but doesn't like to be handled. (or something like that, it's been awhile) Depending on how they were raised (especially from hatching) they might be more or less OK with feeding/handling. Also depends on the bird's attitude (I had one that was fully trained, but she had a major 'tude which got her in a very painful but hilarious situation)

With that said, did you find any photos? I would love to see them if you did! ^^
Oh, I see! Thanks for telling me, that's some nice info I'll keep in mind for when I get my next bird friends (because I do plan on adopting some). My budgie had a fun personality, but she didn't like to be handled at all, or touched, or anything other than being spoken to, actually. But I still loved her dearly, and I felt a certain connection to her, if that makes sense. I was only a small child back then, so I wish I could have handled her better, but I know she's in a better place now.
