thank you *beams* trying out different styles has made me realise what i like about my own and the stuff i like from the other styles i can put into my own.. i've actually found my own style has started to become more cartooney as time goes on 0.o

i do indeed! typically most of the commissions i do at the min are drawing people or their OCs in one of my different styles and i would post them the pic. typically i would do a pic in either
Cartooney style (like this www.facebook.com/4620915705009… )
manga style ( www.facebook.com/4620915705009… hard to see, sorry, bad photo)
or as a my little pony (you can see examples in my gallery of my style)

I'm experimenting with new styles i can do of people (as you can see here with my recent batman or coraline pics). if you are interested give me a bell here or on my website sakurayume.co.uk (I'd prob answer there easier since i'm on fb a lot more than DA hehe) I can do more complex ones if you want but they might take longer to get done or cost more depending on complexity or materials used :-D

I was looking for CG ways to animate facial expressions using Blender 3D for a best-looking cartoon style, then in my research I've landed directly in an old topic in BlenderArtists where you seem to know a lot about this stuff, even coding. xD But since it's a bit old topic, and Blender has got lots of updates since 2010, would you care telling me a bit of what is best solution to do actually? xD Thank you! I've seen some of your linked results and sounds tempting to use textures, but I've never done textures neither blend shapes yet. xD

hi moonlance, sorry for the delay, i don't get to check my DA for some nights.
this makes me happy my old stuff was happened upon, i never got back into blender properly since they did the 2.5-2.6 updates since they never brought back the functionality i was using for my animestyle stuff. that and i knew if i got back into it i would love myself in it and spend all the time on 3d stuff again XD
What i tried to do was i uv mapped the entire face and separated the eyes, mouth, nose, eyebrows and cheeks into separate texture channels. i built a python script that let you change the image for each of these channels at a specific frame. like, at frame1 the eyes would be open, at frame 45 it would be starting to close, 47 closed, 49 opening, 52 open, etc. I tried to do it like a cartoon animator would do it and i would adjust timings from a render. This would mean you needed to draw all the textures for these yourself (which i could back then).
I used this for this animation: youtu.be/Win0D7mUlXM her face was completely controlled via those texture channels and my python animation script.
I've seen a lot of anime artists use the MikuMiku method where they completely model the mouth and eyes in 3d and just morph them into blinking or the shapes needed. i do like this method but at this point it's harder to get your 'style' to shine through, a lot of people's anime eyes and faces look too similar, less individuality. thats why i went for handdrawn textures for the face and animate those instead.
just installed blender 2.71 there now (wow, it was freestyle NPR built-in? this is good for anime lines when i used it back in 2.49), opening up the last project i was working on (yuki nagato), and it looks like it can load my last attempt at this from version 2.66. I've included a link to my current settings for this that i was trying to rebuild. in bottom left you can see that i building it so that a script would switch between 2 image textures (mouth base and mouth 2) based on the current time, the start frame and the end frame. it would output the colour and alpha value.. which is essentially what my older script did. if this interests you, i can pass you the script details.. i don't think i finished it but it shouldn't be too hard to complete, either myself or yourself since i may get back into this again soon :3

any of this help hun? your character looks rather cute, i see you modelled the eyes and mouth in 3d. if you wanna use 3d eyes and mouth, you would need to look into shapes and morphs and using a slider to control it. an example would be my other video here:

which i used 3d eyes and mouth and i animated them by morphing them between shapes. I didn't keyframe the face at all, i used a slider that controlled the face shapes and i animated/keyframed that.. trying to see if i have an image to show for that.

not a good image as it seems a lot of my textures and shapes have broken from the last version in 2.71 but it gives you an idea what i mean by slider bars for animating.
a part of me (esp now) wants to get back into blendering, i took a break from it when i starting writing my thesis for my mphil/phd in virtual reality and when i completed that i decided to concentrate on artwork and my comics, and i'm still in that phase. i know if i go back to it, i will get addicted to blendering again and spend every night working on getting my models and animations continued.. i dont think im ready for that yet, since i am enjoying drawing and painting again i will get back into it, let me know how your work goes hun. i love your style, it's a cutely rough combination of manga and cartooney styles (similar to what i aim for a lot of the time now) and i'd love to see how things go for yourself :-D

Thank you very much for the big, well detailed answer; I was nearly about to think you hated me and my complicated questions) xDDD
I appretiate your information a lot; I think I need to try out (learn) both the solutions: 1) the texture channels under 'remote controlling' by script; 2) and the 'traditional' method of blend shapes, morphs or MikuMiku method which I guess are the same thing. It's very nice to know this is actually possible to do. xD And your animation results are fascinating; Yet I concur with you the texture channels method seem to be better in cartoon/manga characterizations; UNLESS (maybe), if there was some sort of blend shapes which would be really sophisticated, but I doubt this would be simple to achieve. My actual hypothesis though is that perhaps a combination of both techniques (texture channels with blend shapes) could result in an interesting, thrilling result o.o It seems unlikely someone hasn't tried it before. Therefore a good reason for me to learn both alternatives.
Yes, sure, I'd much be pleased in having the scripts you've made. I know very very few of programming, least Python; but I'm a very curious person so I even have plans for learning scripting. xD And this sounds a concrete opportunity to get aboard and set some basic knowledges - in a good case scenario, I might figure out some way to solve the issue of updating to Blender 2.71. xD
Yes, it is. xD This Freestyle incredible tool, so easy to learn and render in Blender, as you might already know, allows to select which edges we're wanting to render in a particular line style selected. It just plainly rocks for scenery and... even characters. xD But I should stop talking about it, before the Blender blackhole gobbles you down. xD Believe it or not, I know exactly what you've meant, as I'm just starting getting back to Blender 3D after about 1 year (that last time I was so 'melted' in the modeling praxis, that I even started dreaming of using the UI, like... dragging vertices, scaling and so on. xDD
But now I've definitely decided to recommence - with the experience gathered from that last time; you know how it works. xD I had stopped exactly at the critical point I was starting to experiment and understand via tutorials the rigging and setup system, which for me is something of great importance because I used to do 2D Traditional Animation - all I want, definitively, is being able to design, model, setup and animate my own cartoonish-mangastuffed characters. xDD And maybe with some scripting, will be able to make some free open games using software, such as Unity. You know, all those crazy things which are happening virtually globally nowadays, concerning open source community and 'prosuming'.
