Hey Veras, I have a question.
Will the AFA still continue, given the circumstances you have suffered through?
(The sportslogos.net hosted AFA page is archived thankfully)

Veras,
Greetings from Australia!
Your American Football Association is an awesome concept and I have really enjoyed reading the diligence you have put into creating this whole league! It is an awesome concept and the histories and evolution of the 28 teams you have created are interesting that it's amazing! I can't wait to see more of it!
My favourite designs of yours are the Chicago Butchers knife on football logo (1956), Cleveland Ghosts logo (1974), Guardians of Cincinnati logo, Richmond/Baltimore Royals logos, St. Louis Aces wordmark (1978) and the Seattle Grizzlies logo (1978)! All have been really good!

Thanks! I really appreciate the compliment.
Out of curiosity, have you followed along on the forums at boards.sportslogos.net, or just here?

Here's a quick glimpse of just a handful of DFL superstars way back in the Fifties...

I hadn't seen the Dragons yet, but yeah. I really like the Orcas. The look isn't to far off from where I expect to go with the Whales. Eventually, they'll probably switch back to using an orca for their logo, and add black to their blue and white scheme.
I saw your NBA thing, too. It was a short project, but I really enjoyed it.

Thanks. I've been at it for nearly a year, and have made it through 23 seasons, so hopefully I can stick with it and get up to 2020 or so.

How do you decide outcomes?

Each team is assigned an overall rating from 1 to 10. I don't do specific week to week schedules, but there is always a detailed rotation for what opponents each team should have in a given year. I roll a d12 for the home team and a d10 for the visiting team, which accurately accounts for home field advantage, and compare the results for each matchup. I have no way to account for injuries, but I track the sum of each team's rolls, which gives me a good idea of how well they "played" in a given year. If they have an especially good season, I assume that they had a breakout player or something similar; while if they have an especially bad year, I assume that it was the result of injury problems or similar difficult situations.
I have an Excel spreadsheet which helps me manage all of this, particularly adding the rolls to the team rating (which is nice, because a single season is up to 350 rolls now). It also makes it very easy to properly order the standings.
The only game that I describe in detail is the championship game. I determine the winner by the standard dice rolling method, but them compare the results and write a scoring summary for the game. This is still largely randomized, with die rolls being used to determine when and how scores occurred.
At the end of each season, I decide how each team has progressed, and modify their overall rating accordingly. A team that has performed poorly will likely get worse, and teams that performed well will likely improve. I also track the ages of star players and the average age of each team, which will also impact if and by how much they improve or get worse. Finally, I track draft order, which allows me to know how well each team should be able to replenish its talent supply.

A man after my own heart. Over the years, all of the sports games that I played, from boxing to soccer, I have been obsessed(?) with records and statistics. I still have notebooks and score sheets from games that I played decades ago.
Fifteen years ago you probably could have sold your game system to some company for a million dollars.

Me too. I even went so far as to do a fantasy football league for a franchise in Madden 03 (If I remember right, Eddie George outscored everybody else by like 20%).
The suggestion that I could have sold it 15 years ago is pretty entertaining. I've been using the basis of the system for about that long. When I was in middle school, I was looking through one of my dad's NFL season preview magazines, and I noticed that each team had numerical ratings for each position group. I put each one into Excel, weighted them, and simulated the season. I'm pretty sure that it was the year that Korey Stringer passed away, and the year after the Ravens won their first Super Bowl, which would have been the 2001-2002 season. Later, I used it to simulate future seasons of the Blitz League.
Part of the reason that I started doing the AFA in such detail is that I came to the conclusion that Madden hasn't released a game that I consider to be playable since 2008, and a good one since 2005. I wanted a football simulation that wasn't so boring, and this is what I came up with.
