My favourite thing about Franklin.. hmnh..
About him as a person (as I have yet to research his actual work properly yet) I love the relationship he had with Churchill. It's sounds so creepy, but the book about their relationship is amazing! I ship their BFF-ness, hardcore.
And just.. his personality. And that smile of his! He could melt the heart of millions with that smile!
Oh, and I love all the crazy stories about all the weird things he got up to. And how inspirational he is!
.. I can't possibly pick just one thing about him! I could honestly go on forever about what I like about him xD

I hear you man. Mostly I'm a fan of the things he did (or, as with the court packing, tried to do), especially with regards to his own background. What can I say, I'm a Socialist at heart.
But, economics aside, the man himself was great.

Y'know, what you've got there is not a unique problem. Forget what you've heard about the American school system, at least in this case anyway.
With F.D.R. there's a lot of slippery ground, here in the States. Y'see, we have had a serious fear of Communism that goes all the way back, more or less, to the invention of Marxism. This was about the same time as an increase of European immigration into America. That said, those seeking public office who ran on Nationalist platforms, which were known for being violently anti-immigrant, made the case that they were not against the immigrants themselves, but the economic policy that had shared the immigrants' homeland.
This was a thinly veiled explanation for their racism and, for the lighter handed politicians, a reason for immigrants to vote for them, if they had left home to avoid the new ethos. Marxism, and Communism, were not and are not particularly understood by Americans, and Socialism, having a few qualities in common with the former, was likewise dreaded. This sentiment lived on in this form until the Red Scare of the 1920's, when it became particular to Communism, Marxism and Socialism being lumped in. WWII saw a slackening of this opinion, but with its end and the beginning of the Cold War with Russia and the new Communism and Marxist nations sprouting up, anti-Communism was reborn.
SO, when it comes to F.D.R., those who have the time to really go over his policies and declare them Socialist are not applauded for doing so. What's more, fans tend to cover their own asses by saying he wasn't a Socialist, but had Socialist-like policies. Should a fan make the argument that he was an honest to God Socialist, whether or not he would have called himself one, they are shunned because of the powerful remaining fear from the past century.
So, yeah, America will not come to terms with it for a while, but I see it like this. Socialist is as Socialist does, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt did as Socialists do.
Whew. There's your American History lesson for the day.

Lol, I think it's very much the same over here, all we're taught about the U.K. is that one day we were colonies thereof, and the next we started a war, then a couple hundred years later we fought with them against Germany twice.
