JUST SAW ENCHANTED ISLAND!!! The cast was EXCELLENT. Joyce DiDonato is my new opera heroine. I'm not a huge fan of Baroque, but oh man, the singers were awesome. It was cool to see Luca Pisaroni again, but it seemed that he was having quite a bit of trouble singing in English, but it was so cute during the intermission when he was asked if he was having trouble with English, and his eyes widened and he said "Yes." Oh man, he's so cute.
I don't know who was playing Ferdinand, but he had a BEAUTIFUL timbre. I took my little brother to see it and surprisingly he didn't have any trouble focusing for four hours. This is a kid hyped up on ADHD! He loved it!

Oh my gosh, I can't believe I'm JUST getting back to you! my god the past two weeks have been INSANE because of class and we started rehearsal for Kismet (which is a wonderful operetta, if you don't know it, I totally recommend checking out the music!) I'm so glad that you and your brother enjoyed the show! That's awesome that you can share your love for it with your family! My mother's one of my opera-going buddies but my dad....haha let's not talk about that! XD

I love love loooved that interview with Luca Pisaroni. I agree, he was very cute, especially when he said that he had to shave his head for the performance and he missed the long hair he had for Don Giovanni! Joyce DiDonato is also incredibly infectious, you could tell she was just itching to get back out there and perform!

I'm curious, what did you think of Danielle de Niese? I keep hearing mixed things about her, but I think she was pretty damn awesome in this production!

squonkhunter In reply to WinterInJuly [2012-02-16 19:07:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm sorry you've been so busy! I'm glad you can go with your mom. Haha same with my dad.

Yeah haha poor guy. He missed his hair. Oh man, Joyce DiDonato was INCREDIBLE in all her arias. I especially loved the first one she sang, what she could do with her voice. Absolutely incredible.

Oh, are you kidding? Ariel was everyone's favorite character! Haha we all loved her; Danielle de Niese was fantastic. I thought she was one of the best performers.

Haha we read "A Midsummer Night's Dream" for English class, which I hadn't read before the opera, and I was like, "Wait, Hermia? Demetrius? Helena? LYSANDER?!" WAT. Nah, I knew it was based on MSND and The Tempest. Still funny. It was neat that Ariel was heavily based on Puck, but she was also very much her own character. Yeah, no, Danielle de Niese was amazing. Critics are stupid.

Haha thanks so much, and good luck in your opera career! I'd considered doing opera, perhaps, (as a distant dream of mine) but I'm a baritone and a girl. I don't know how many parts there would be for me. :/
Anyway, what do you sing? Have you played any interesting characters yet? What's your favorite opera / opera song / composer, etc? :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WinterInJuly In reply to squonkhunter [2011-11-13 21:43:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! I'm not really sure I ever heard of a female having a baritone voice...do you mean more of an alto voice? If so...I'm not really sure in terms of roles for that type of voice.

I'm a light soprano so one day I would kill for a role like Rosina in The Barber of Seville Zerlina in Don Giovanni (though I have worked on her Batti, Batti and it makes me smile every time I do sing it). I also just saw the Don Giovannio at the met with Mariusz Kwiecien as Giovanni...oh my that man is a GOD!

In terms of favorite opera....my god that's so hard to answer! XD There are just too many! Practically everything by Puccini makes me swoon though, and Mozart is always wonderful because my voice is suited for it and anything written by him feels so good to sing!

How about you? What have been your favorite operas/composers/characters, etc? ^_^

squonkhunter In reply to WinterInJuly [2011-11-13 22:08:58 +0000 UTC]

I'm going to see that performance soon! On Wednesday, via movie theater. Ah well. You take what you can get.

Nah, baritone. Alto gets too high sometimes. I can sing Don Giovanni's parts very easily (got "Deh Vieni Alla Finestra" memorized) and Leporello's songs as well, since he's a high bass. (But Sarastro in Die Zauberfloete? Forget it!)

Puccini is gorgeous. Makes me cry. Um...I'm trying to get more into Verdi because everything I've heard from him is glorious. I grew up on the film "Amadeus," so my favorite composer to this day is still Mozart. I can sing Papageno's songs and I've also memorized "Aprite un po' quegli occhi" from Le Nozze di Figaro, which is also really fun. Susanna seems like she'd be hella fun to sing. You could try that!

Have you studied any of the operatic languages? I hear opera singers use a phonetic alphabet or something to help them pronounce things in any language. Is that true?

Um...favorite operatic character is definitely Leporello. I'm perplexed by his putting up with the Don's antics and the whole psychology of it. Why does he put up with so much? What's his story? And he's so funny. An actor can have a really fun time with that role, and that's what attracts me to it. My favorite actor as Leporello has to be Ferruccio Furlanetto. Also, when he's paired with Samuel Ramey as Don Giovanni, the two are unstoppable. (If you haven't guessed, "Don Giovanni" is my favorite opera.)

OOoo! How was the show? I love the fact that Fathom events brings the Met to the movie theater now! It makes me so happy!

That's incredibly interesting to me that you can sing those roles! I'm impressed at your range! Speaking of Le Nozze di Figaro, I'm actually in the middle of working on Susana's "Deh, vieni non tardar," so it's funny you mention that! :3

In terms of languages, I have been exposed to Italian, German, French (and a few others, Hebrew and Latin), but I am not fluent in them or close to it. I am going to be really diving into my Italian to start in January (followed by the German and French eventually), and my voice teacher cracks down on me though and makes sure that everything is pronounced right, so I'm getting there XD However, I have never heard of the phonetic alphabet you are talking about, nor has my instructor mentioned it, so now I'm curious o.o I have an investigation to do!!!

I find your points about Leporello to be incredibly interesting. I love doing character studies and now that you've talked about it...why the heck DOESN'T he find a boss/friend who isn't so quick to betray him in order to save his own butt? XD Well...one can hope that he went off to find a pretty lady for himself!

Don Giovanni has quickly become one of my top favorites as well. I'm absolutely in love with Mariusz Kwiecien as him, so that definitely helped me in that direction! lol! But It's also a wonderful mix of comedy and drama and lends itself to wonderful set design potential and also special effects. What did you think about the Met's when you saw the screening? Wasn't that stage cracking open just wicked?!

Saw it last night! What a terrific performance! The staging was brilliant, the performers were incredible, Mariusz Kwiecien was DAMN sexy, and Luca was great as Leporello. I took my girlfriend and one of my guy friends, both of whom I have successfully converted into opera fans, and they loved it. I tried to talk as little as possible, but there were some parts that weren't subtitled that I was able to translate for them, like why is Leporello going "Ta ta ta ta!" when talking about the ghost, and other little things like that.

I have to say, I REALLY loved the woman who played Elvira. Hers was the only performance I'd ever witnessed that actually made me feel sorry for Elvira, because normally I'm just laughing at her. She's such an infallible cock-blocker. I also loved what was done with the blocking, like the scene at the end of Act One, where Giovanni GRABS DONNA ANNA BY KNIFE POINT and DON OTTAVIO HAD A PISTOL...that's not written in the music or anything, but it really added to the scene and fit with the intensity of the moment and was appropriate to the story and the characters. It actually had me in suspense, like I was seeing it for the first time and I didn't know what was going to happen, and that's impressive, because I know this opera inside and out. There was not one note I didn't expect, and I was mouthing the lyrics for the majority of the songs. Yet...at times, I was unsure of what was going to happen, and was caught up in that magic. It was splendid.

Masetto and Zerlina were so freaking cute!!! I loved them...totally the best couple of that opera. It was also cool to hear the actors talk about how they felt about the characters. The actress playing Elvira provided some interesting insight, like that Elvira was the right woman for the Don, but he could never see that. I'd never weighed that option. I always saw her as forever alone and the don as troll face.

Anyway, it was incredible, and I'm hooked to see their production of Sigfried. Should be AWESOME. I've never done Wagner before. I've been told that Mozart is "light and fluffy" in comparison (this from my German teacher).

Hmm...I don't know which duet you're talking about. Which act is that in?
