Hi, I say a post that said you were accepted into Govenors School for the Arts. I'm trying to get in this year for visual art and could use some help. Anything you think might be useful I would much appreciate.

Thanks for the watch! My first one!
Why do I know both the names of J.D. Salinger and Kurt Vonnegut? Sure I could Google them, but there's more interest in human interaction!

WinterRave In reply to CapnDred [2008-10-02 14:43:22 +0000 UTC]

Well, I can't really be sure why you recognize the names. Personally, I had to read "Catcher in the Rye" (Salinger) and "Slaughterhouse Five" (Vonnegut) in high school. They are the most notable books relative to each author.

Vonnegut is known for being a "black humorist," a term used, to my best ability to describe it, as a cynical and somewhat absurd at times sense of humor with dark undertones: kind of like a B Movie horror film. Vonnegut also writes a lot of social commentary (i.e. "Man Without a Country"<--- that's a good one).

Salinger writes more about situations of ordinary people while applying a grade of existential thought to the stories (esp. in his short stories). Catcher in the Rye was all about an adolescent who had grown up too fast and struggled with his own machinations about life, applying himself, and loss of innocence.

Any of this ringing bells?

All right, first I must apologize for not getting around to reading parts II and III of your story... I'll probably print it off for a look-through at my leisure, considering I've been rather busy/distracted with Gunny around. I am STILL looking forward to it though, no worries.

And second, I have tagged you.
Check out my journal.

WinterRave In reply to VampyreDearest [2008-08-06 04:35:07 +0000 UTC]

Hey, no rush. When you're doing someone a favor there aren't many things that need to be apologized for. I'm glad you're still interested though. And I shall consider your taggery. I've never participated in one of these, so I must say I'm at a lack for practice. But I'll be considering if I've got eight things to say about myself.

As an editor I feel bad if I make the client wait too long; this is the problem with working on multiple projects simultaneously... xD
Two people commented my journal with their responses, so they didn't have to tag. You could do that. Or just not tag anyone. XD

WinterRave In reply to VampyreDearest [2008-08-06 17:54:46 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... I feel kind of important being a client. I think I kind of like the sound of that.

VampyreDearest In reply to WinterRave [2008-08-07 04:01:48 +0000 UTC]

Well, I consider editing/revising fun. Especially if it means finding an already-good writer (or a poor one with great ideas) and helping him/her improve.
I see this as a win-win situation. Mutual symbiosis, if you will.
"Client" seems to be a much shorter way of saying it, though.

I'm glad you feel important. XD

And that totally just reminded me I printed off II and forgot to retrieve it from el printer-o.
Blast!

Well, my favorite poem of his is The Ballad of Reading Gaol. Other than that, I would suggest The Picture of Dorian Gray as well. (The second being a novel).

Some people think its a bit dull but I feel that it has a more slow victorian feel to it. It's strange, but I really like it.

And if you looked up more quotes of his, you might find those amusing as well.

Sorry it took so long.

WinterRave In reply to DRWick [2008-07-29 18:21:38 +0000 UTC]

Never a problem. I'd been trying to get his work from a local bookstore. But of all the books they have I found nothing. Then on my way out a woman came to the counter and asked for "The Picture of Dorian Gray" which she had apparently reserved. They gave it to her and I was like "Ohhh you bitch..." I thought about robbing it from her Jerry Seinfeld style (the episode where he stole the marble rye from an old lady) but I resisted. I'll get a hold of it sometime.

I found a copy of "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" online and I bookmarked it. I'm reading it by sections because it's a monster. Now I know where you got the lines:
"Yet each man kills the thing he loves
By each let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss, The brave man with a sword!"

Well, normally if I see a poem on the front page as new work I'll check it out just to see people whos work i've never read before, so that explains me finding it so soon after you posted it. And as I said it reminded me of the way I used to write with lots of abstract concepts and imagery. It was worth favoriting.

Just "man Without a Country" Kurt Vonnegut book, no real plotline to it. Jst kind of his view on the world and was written not too long before he died. He talks about what he believes it means to be an artist and a writer and what he thinks life is about.
