Ah, so the face from Disturbed is that widely used? XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

alikatt91 In reply to WilliamTheKonqueror [2012-12-10 23:23:40 +0000 UTC]

Probably, but I wouldn't be surprised if Disturbed wasn't the first to use a face shrouded in darkness with glowing red eyes and a gleaming grin. I guess you could call the concept one of these ageless reoccurring ideas that have been around for centuries.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WilliamTheKonqueror In reply to alikatt91 [2012-12-10 23:24:46 +0000 UTC]

I suppose. Besides, the original concept didn't have an eye color.

alikatt91 In reply to WilliamTheKonqueror [2012-12-10 23:30:06 +0000 UTC]

That's true, now that you mention it, I remember they used to be white.

You'd be surprised how most stories and plot elements today trace back to ancient lore and mythos. It's really interesting how ideas and concepts have morphed and twisted, yet still remained essentially the same.

alikatt91 In reply to WilliamTheKonqueror [2012-12-11 21:52:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, while I am one who prefers to keep discussions about religion (and politics) off of public domains, I will at least agree that religion is, in essence, a form of Mythos. No matter if the stories are 100% real, loosely based on actual events, or completely fabricated, the fact that they are taught to masses who in turn revere the characters in the stories, and are passed on through generations, they become no different from what we consider ancient mythology.

For instance, what we consider today as mythology and fabricated stories, ancient Greeks and Romans truly believed was a system of religion.

However, aside from religious instances, modern mythology is happening all around us every moment. What we call 'pop culture' in literature, gaming and film is really just modern lore. Examples include Harry Potter, The Legend of Zelda, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, the DC and Marvel universes, and so on. Such stories teach us countless lessons about what it means to be human, how we fit in the universe, as well as the raw moral laws rooted in our existence (such an example of the latter is that killing is wrong. Aside from the anti-hero period in the early 20th Century, and the modern revival of such where we are encouraged to glorify vigilantes who stand in the gray zone [ie: V for Vendetta or Batman], overall you will find most antagonists have some moral standing against killing without reason. This "law" per se, has nothing to do with religion, despite popular belief, but in fact comes from our desire to survive. Humans banded together to survive; for anyone treading life alone - especially with blood on their hands - would find survival that much harder.)

I am more than happy to carry an intellectual discussion revolving around the evolution of human storytelling, but all I ask is that sensitive topics are kept off my page. Because it is public domain, people from all walks of life may happen across it, and I would appreciate it if my page was kept clear of offensive material out of respect for my audience.

DAMN, that was a long comment!
I catch your meaning, though. One can say that any cultural aspect of a time period could be considered the mythos of another time period.

If you'd like to continue this discussion over notes, I'd be very glad. You seem like somebody who I can really talk to.

alikatt91 In reply to WilliamTheKonqueror [2012-12-11 22:06:32 +0000 UTC]

Precisely, the context of a story and how it is received depends heavily on the time period in which it is presented. In fact, there is a short story that had been written in the late 19th century, I believe, speculating about what sorts of technology would be present a century later. Reading it in the modern day, one would otherwise think it's just a silly, uninspired story written by someone today pretending to look through the eyes of a citizen from the Victorian age. I'd love to share it with you if you're interested, it's a wonderful example of how time changes context.

I'd be more than happy to continue our discussion through notes. However, this is my secondary account and I'm not usually very active here. Shoot me a note on *GlowstickMinuet instead.

Just a heads up though, today's going to be fairly busy; I have a huge sketch quota to meet and a few personal projects I need to get done before the holidays. If you don't get a response from me over on Glowstick in a terribly convenient amount of time, that's why.
