Ice-cold water on a sizzling hot day makes one feel new and refreshed. Of course, the tragedy in Orwell's Coming up for air is the realization that one cannot take solace in the past because it has more often than not - changed - maybe not for the worst but it is no longer ours except in memory. Thus we are all forced to take comfort in temporary pleasures to sadly escape what is since we cannot return to what has past because it will likely not be what was since that is best left to recollection. All we can do is trudge forward with hope and fate to protect us from heartbreak and sorrow, lust and temptation and, of course, loss.
I tend to elaborate on seemingly insignificant passages but if you look closely there is much meaning and interpretation. My findings might be different from yours but that is okay.
