Yes, my husband has relatives in Friesland - we had a wonderful trip there and rode a boat along the canals for about a week. We're hoping to go again in the next year or two Β Your country is so beautiful, and we love it there!

bgerr In reply to Snotnormal [2016-07-08 07:28:31 +0000 UTC]

Friesland is indeed beautiful .

But so is The States. I visited The San Fransisco area a few years ago - went to Stinton beach and the giant redwood forest - that was absolutely amazing. I have 2 young daughters, and when they are a little older I'd like to visit the USA again. Perhaps take a roundtrip through several states - or go coast to coast.

Freisland was like a storybook to us...the windmills, and all the black and white cows, and the sailboats in the canals. We were there in the summer, and the flowers were growing like crazy. Β I also love Amsterdam! We had a great time there.Β If you do bring your daughters to the US, and if you come to California, then you can all visit me! I live in San Diego, which is the other end of the state from San Francisco,Β all the way south. Β It's a Mediterranean climate here, and we have cactus and succulents and orange trees in our yard. We're on the border with Mexico. We have lots of Mexican friends, and my 2 kids (adopted) are Mexican-American. They're now 20 and 21. I agree about the redwood forest -- it's amazing. And San Francisco is a great city. San Diego is very different, but also nice.

The Netherlands is only a small country, but we have some beautiful places to visit. Sometimes it is hard to appreciate what is around the corner. But my children keep me grounded and looking through their eyes makes you see the beauty and wonder in what is right in front of you.
To have orange trees at arms reach seems amazing to us - I think especially the climate is very appealling to us Dutch. The fact that it's so green here during summer has to do with the rain that falls. A lot.
It might be a while before we travel anywhere far with our kids. They're still quite young and don't like to sit still for long, but if we ever get to visit California we will look you up! Since you're so close to Mexico, do you also speak Spanish?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Snotnormal In reply to bgerr [2016-07-21 19:37:38 +0000 UTC]

Well, I understand a lot of Spanish, but I don't speak it very well...I just had a glass of orange juice that I squeezed after picking the oranges from the trees What amazes me is to see apples on trees! We don't have those here. We also don't get a lot of rain, and I always love a rainy day, because it's so special here. I'm sure that's a big difference!! The weather today is in the 90s, bright and sunny and hot. Low humidity and a little breeze, that's making it easier to take. The summer can be quite hot here. I also need to go into the garden and water plants every couple of days, to keep them healthy and comfortable. If I don't, they just dry up and die. So I imagine it's very different from what you're used to Β I'm a little curious about your crafts -- do you sell them online, or do you also sell in stores in Europe? Β Also, are you self-taught? Your work is amazing!

bgerr In reply to Snotnormal [2016-07-29 10:24:06 +0000 UTC]

Oh that's so awesome! I love eating/drinking homegrown stuff. We have strawberries in our garden - which grow in abundance this time of year and several green herbs. We make our own mint tea for example. Due to a lack of time for gardening we stuck to just the strawberries this year, but last year we had a little vegetable patch with lettuce and tomatoes as well.

We had some nice weather as well - it's been quite hot the last few days. Unfortunately the humidity is also very high, so everyting feels a little sticky. Today we have some rain, that takes a little of the damp out of the air. Which is a relief.

As to my crafts, I'm not entirely self taught. I did a workshop with droomwerelden (which translates as dreamworlds), which is a studio near to where I live. The owner Marij makes dreamworlds for a living and teaches workshops making them. Ik got totally hooked and have made almost 20 of them now since that first one. I'm still going to her workshop once every two weeks to work on new pieces. I have moved on though from the first one and added to the concept so that now Marij often takes new ideas from me.

I have only sold 1 piece - the candy lamp to a candy store. Which was really cool. All the other pieces I gave away to family and friends. I an contemplating setting up shop though. I'm looking into different possibilities like etsy and dawanda, but it is not a priority right now. How are your experiences with etsy?
