I've never actually done a tutorial. I'm learning as I go really. Just playing around with shapes, gradients and transparencies. And I to can take a long time on an illustration. To me they don't look any good until the very end. So I spend a lot of time thinking one isn't going anywhere, then a revisit brings a new idea. Inspiration comes from all kind of places. Just spend lots of time playing with the software. There are official tutorials on www.lynda.com that I should really look at myself.
