Yo womin. Firstly- epic costume. Secondly- long time no see. Thirdly- Got a question.

Whar do you and Cel buy your contacts? Saung and I got 2 pairs from a company that had a few reviews that were good- they were red ones that glowed under a black light. One of the contacts ripped while in his eye, and after several attempts of trying to get one in I flipped out and gave up. Though that isn't the company's fault. They also traveled a lot really bad- which made it /very/ hard to see. Overall I'm sketched out by them more than before but if I got some from a decent place I might try them out again. :S

there you go my friend.  I've only ordered myself from colored-contacts-hut, but I've heard of the others as being good.

Basically with contacts you're looking for contacts that are FDA approved and who use quality paint on the lens.  There are a few good sites from Japan/China but I prefer to buy from the UK and have never had a reason not to.  Also remember that overall, you get what you pay for.  I shell out $30 PER CONTACT for prescription lenses; without a prescription you're looking for ALT LEAST $10-20 per contact.  Some sites will tell you if they're weighted at all to stay on the iris (this is of course preferred because you don't want it to travel, and necessary if it's something like a slitted pupil), so look for that as well.

As with any online shopping, looking for ones with customer reviews, FAQ, and a good website are all indicators that the contacts will be quality.

When you get your contacts, clean them in contact saline solution and keep them safe in one of the contact containers.  Wash your hands thoroughly before you handle them.  If you're not used to putting in contacts, I recommend practicing with them weeks before the event so you're more confident getting them into your eye and so you're not pressured for time.  If a contact hurts when it's in your eye and centered on your iris, it is an indication that something is wrong; the contact could be inside-out or dirty (more likely with colored contacts who have an obvious in and outside).  Be on the lookout for hair, towel fibers, and makeup on your contacts.  Also, put on contacts *before* doing your makeup, particularly makeup around your eyes.

Hope that helps!!  Let me know if you have any more questions!

Another question I just thought of. Do you have any body/paint makeup you'd recommend? The stuff I used last night was okay. It didn't set well and came off pretty easy. I had to keep touching it up. pretty sure a ren fest in AZ would have melted it off. Been eyeing a kind of airbrush makeup but not sure.

And also- any kind of glue for ears and stuff? We bought spirit gum from a Halloween store here and it worked but I've been peeling it off still tonight even and it wasn't very comfortable. I think personally I'm allergic to it. I could tolerate it for a day but ya know, if you can get better that's epic.

(you have no idea how happy these questions make me... they're all questions I had at one point in time!)

1) Makeup brands:  There's a few brands you can use.  Ben Nye is great oil-based makeup, goes on smoothly and comes in pretty much every color imaginable.  It stays on pretty well, but can feel "oily" to the touch.  Alternatively, there is Aquacolor, which goes on with water (and thus is water-based), feels dry to the touch, and stays on you like a champion.  (I use Ben Nye for my Steampunk Merman costume, and Aquacolor did the skull and stayed on my lips through eating and drinking.)  There are of course probably tons of other makeup brands out there, but those are the two I've used personally and stand by.  (They also will both blend nicely for you.)

2) Makeup Application:  The basic rule, as you may know, is to get setting powder for makeup.  Sometimes the setting powder you use for your regular foundation can be okay, but if you're doing unusual colors, your normal setting powder runs the risk of depositing skintone color over an unnatural color.  Ben Nye sells a colorless face powder called "neutral set", and I recommend investing in something similar.  (Powder of course also keeps you from looking too shiny).  Apply liberally.

Apply make-up with makeup wedges (you can get these in the dollar store) and/or your fingers and build it up in layers.  If you do your eyelids, apply a heavy coat to them and keep that eye closed as you immediately put powder on it, otherwise you'll get creases on that area.  You can get things called stippling wedges (or something like that) that are good for applying texture to the face, or creating a stubble effect.  Getting eyeliners in these colors can also help fill in your eye line or add details.

3) Getting shit to stick to your head/body:  Spirit Gum does work pretty well for things like ears or sticking sequins or other small items to your face, but it's not my personal favorite.  It leaves residue (it *does* have a remover, if you didn't know), it hurts to pull off, sometimes with bigger pieces it won't hold it on at all, etc.  (The first time I wore my Thor costume with the beard, I used spirit gum to attach my beard and it was the worst decision I've ever made in my life.  It had to be re-applied constantly, gummed up the beard, and was hell to pull off.)  MY FAVORITE PRODUCT THAT I SHOVE AT EVERYONE as an alternative to spirit gum is called Prosthetic Adhesive.  It sounds scary, but this stuff is wonderful; it's flexible, so you can move your face around and it won't come off, and water-resistant.  It's a little more annoying to apply since it doesn't get tacky as quickly as spirit gum, but it's worth the time.

Hope that helps!

Also- the ben nye is hell on my face. My skin is so oily that the makeup roflpwnt me and i'm still dealing with breakouts.

All teh halps!

I think we did use ben nye, and yeah it went on great but dur dur we used a brush so it was very thick- also used a primer/setter. To me it was infuriating as like I think I said- came off very easy. I have to clean some of the hair on the wig and that was just from touching it, plus having to reapply it for someone as white as me cosplaying a drow- in arizona- is going to be hell if it's hot(er than normal?).

And yeah, I'm pretty meh about the spirit gum. I'm still finding some of it in my hair and around my ears x.x

Btw, if you know you're gonna sweat, you can use a pore-blocking agent by Ben Nye called "Skin Prep".  In addition to setting powder you can also buy final seal spray.  That might help with makeup running off (and might? even help with breaking out)

Ugh oh yeah I can imagine being hot would make that makeup a nightmare.  Definitely try a water-based makeup next time.  You have to build it up (especially lighter colors like white) but it's worth the time.

Seriously-- prosthetic adhesive, man.
