I have a question, what is the ideal thickness of the pumpkin? I was working on mine when I thought the flesh was pretty thick and not shining as well as yours.

It really depends on how many "levels" of light you want and how bright your light bulb is. It's usually just easier to scrape down the inside wall after you've made your carving than it is to increase the depth of the carving itself.

I really like your work, you have a very steady hand! I've been reading the tips you've been sending out, any pearls of wisdom on lighting? Me and my brother have a competition every year but we always have a problem with candles going out and nothing artificial seems the same!

Well if you're doing a full carving (cutting all of the way through the pumpkin) then a light bulb will probably not look as good as a candle. You could try one of those fake LED candles that even have a flicker effect. They're often battery powered. Although I'm not sure how bright they tend to be. If you do use a light bulb I'd recommend using a CFL since you can get much brighter ones without them getting super hot. You could also cover the inside of the pumpkin (or at least right behind the carved areas) with some wax paper. This will scatter the light better and give you a more even looking glow.

I use exactos and the wood carving tools like you. I've never thought to use screwdrivers or needles o__O I don't think I'm enough of an artist to use screwdrivers effectively lol

Well I think another thing that helps is the stencil itself. I found that printing it in various shades of pink works better than blacks and greys because then you can see the areas you have already cut or traced with a needle better. Also if you can print the stencil with a laser printer or something similar (vs inkjet) it will really help to keep the image from running when the pumpkin juice "bleeds" on it.

I don't have a printer, but I do have a computer so I trace the image off the screen as if using a light table, exacto-knife out the bits needed, and use washable pen to trace and mark shade/cut areas onto the rind. I copy the stencil beforehand so that I can reference to it while carving. But your work with lighting and different shade depths is amazing! I'm still trying to get the hang of stuff like that. :/
