btw, do you know any history about these stones? They're pretty awesome

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JimWithNoName In reply to darrardarljod [2011-09-16 16:26:19 +0000 UTC]

They are awesome, yes. I'm glad you like them. I know nothing of each individual stone. The people were Neolithic, maybe dating to 4000 BC from remains found and carbon dating. They are from the stone age, not ape men but people like you and me. The Neolithic age is thought to be the beginning and spread of agriculture from the middle East to Europe.
It is thought they may be markers of territory, or shamanic gateways to other realms... the truth is, no one really knows for sure. How different their mind was to ours! The people were tied in with nature which they worshipped. The changing seasons, the movement of stars and cycles in life generally. They were a fighting people always at war, yet they came together some how to move these monuments for a greater cause perhaps. Some stones have been moved many miles from the original position to be standing where they are now, and we do not even know how they were moved. Only guessing at log rollers and much man/ woman power. It's a big subject and really worth reading about.

Many of these sites are now in places of natural beauty, left as if by some quirk of fate for us to learn of our distant past. Many have been destroyed by farmers for the stone, many destroyed by the Romans, a change in culture and belief systems. It seems they were a deeply spiritual, ritualistic and superstitious people. The beginning of modern man as he walked out of the caves..

Hope this helps, I could go on hehe x

it does help and thank you very much!
not to be all nerdy but after i read your post i thought of Levi-Strauss "we can only find scattered elements of what was, earlier, a meaningful whole".
one of my favorite quotes. creation cannot come without destruction and vice versa... (sad sometimes...)

maybe it was a much better time...i'd like to believe so.
Did any of the stones have any carvings, writings, etc...? Has there ever been any archaeological excavations? Sorry if I'm asking too much. Just looks like a beautiful place

JimWithNoName In reply to darrardarljod [2011-09-16 17:21:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes, lovely quote Melissa and quite right. Creation, destruction, creation - cycles of life
Some stones have carvings, but they are abstract patterns, spirals, zig zags. Maybe hallucinogenic patterns of mind and nature? They are so so old, little survives. Excavations have been made, many in the last few centuries looking for treasure. The bones were moved aside in many cases and so resting positons of the dead were not properly recorded as our knowledge of bone was zero in those days. They meant nothing, whereas now, it means a lot to archaeologists.
Polished jade axe heads have been found, finely crafted for perhaps ritual use. It is now understood that trading of stone and other objects, was indeed happening, and was coming from far a field. Right across Europe, so they clearly had a connection with each other.
It is so strange though, I have recently read a book on bone remains in earth tombs in the UK. The tombs are sometimes referred to as barrows. Long barrows and round barrows - it's a reference to their shape. Long barrows contained skulls of a long shape, round barrows with rounder skulls! Long barrows are older I think, the rounder skulled people were a later neolithic people who moved across from Europe. They had strange funerary practices where they would deflesh the bones, either wild dogs, birds. These were the spirit animals that cleansed the dirty body of flesh in preparation for the afterlife maybe... They were thought to carry the dead relatives with them, they lived along side their ancestors and perhaps traded bones of leaders as power objects.
I don't know if it was better then, the struggle mankind has seems to follow him through the ages, but that connection to mother earth was strong, real, and one we have lost.

I don't mind writing, I'm happy to answer any questions

Jim

hmm. i've seen some stones from Denmark that had some holes (but not all the way thru) or pockets(?) in them and the spirals, etc... there was no information on them. neolithic. and since i saw those stones - i am always wondering why! carvings/drawings i can understand - well more or less why - as some sort of marker, story, map, or something. but the pockets/holes? i think about it a lot. and it is sad that our not so distant ancestors disregarded human remains, ancient art, buildings, etc...i guess the point is now that we preserve what we have - get people interested in it - but still be able to create and build without destroying so much.

let the animals consume your relatives - later maybe eat that animal - and you always keep your relatives inside. it makes sense to let the body go when what is most important is the soul. bones can be preserved - so i guess they would find that valuable as well - for the flesh will rot. people have energies - strong and weak, good and bad and so do objects. bones would be pretty significant then. i think its just harder for us to see like how people used to see - we lost many things. mythology is now called science.

true there has and always will be a struggle. but since i was a child - i wanted that struggle instead. so many things in this era that have never made sense to me. dont get me wrong - i love hot water and a shower everyday. but i want to live where i am actually useful - DOING something.

can i ask you Jim, are you an archaeologist?
and i have to say it is great that you do want to answer me and share its hard for me to find people theses days to have a little convo about such matters

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JimWithNoName In reply to darrardarljod [2011-09-16 18:42:24 +0000 UTC]

You have a great understanding Melissa from what you say and see. I am the same, along with most others I guess, we all need that feeling of being useful, part of a tribe with some purpose in life. Modern life can be very empty and consuming. Coca cola, football, it all seems pointless to me. Yes, hot water is good yes, to have to get water from the earth or river, and heat it makes it more precious, along with everything else. Catch the animal, thank the spirits for the gift, do not take more than is necessary, leave some for later...now we rape the planet, we do not put back, we do not thank the supermarket spirit hehe. It is very sad when we break it down and look closely. Where are we going? Where will it end? How?
I have read that perhaps the stone monuments were meant to stand the test of time to remind future generations where we came from. So we can look back..maybe. It is so anyway.
Christianity has changed our thoughts, moved us from the many gods/goddess' that are in nature, a new world order. Many churches are built upon ancient spiritual sites. Standing stones are christianised, crosses fixed to them or carved upon. The paganism was strong and could not be destroyed, only covered over. This too is sad but that is what we have been like for a long time - thoughtless. That is what I think

I'm not an archaeologist, I am a builder's merchant hehe But, I love nature, history and feeling connected where possible. Visiting these sites does that for me. I can imagine what may have been only, but it's a start for us all.

I'm enjoying talking to you, it's a pleasure for me too. Someone with a like mind You're English is very good.

darrardarljod In reply to JimWithNoName [2011-09-16 21:25:08 +0000 UTC]

empty, consuming and thoughtless. indeed. and those 3 things are fucking powerful. that is what really gets me down. but like you, i just try to get out as much as possible, travel, enjoy being outside. *i think thats why ive been so sad lately - i've been inside for 4 days or so.

what do you think will stand the test of time from our era? (ya know, after the zombie apocalypse). Im still thinking of something...

im surprised you're not an archaeologist! you do know lots

it was something that shocked me when i was younger - that churches are built on top of churches that are built on top of pagan structures that are on top of another site....and it goes on and on. I guess its just convenience to put a new one on top the old one (for those who built the church). but is it also that some places really do have something special about them? i think so.

i've been thinking a lot this summer - i HAVE to get away from cities, towns. I need to get closer to what i love.

and i hope my english is good - for it is my native language Im not polish - but I've been living here for 3 years. Sorry to mislead you and/or disappoint you. (from my experiences - people dont take so kindly to my origins - and i dont blame them sometimes) but, I am a yank well, i wouldnt consider myself a yank nor rebel. Im just Melissa. wanderer.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

JimWithNoName In reply to darrardarljod [2011-09-16 23:07:33 +0000 UTC]

That's fine by me Melissa the wanderer . I guessed you weren't Polish because your english is so good, and your name, and the pictures of America, but I didn't think you were American, but perhaps half Polish, half American, and half, no , wait a minute...
I'm really English although I struggle with the language.. haha. I think we both get bad press for one thing and another....
What will remain of mankind after the big day? Roads, lots of them, and a lot of shit, piles of it.... hehe In centuries to come, when a new generation of life looks back, they will see that we worshipped the great highway, to....the shops, our spiritual centre. Oh how they will marvel at our stupidity hehe.
If anything is to survive, I hope it will be plant life. If nothing, then so be it. It's all good I'm sure of that. We are only here for a brief moment but will be part of the great cycle for ever.

Do you travel a lot then Melissa? I never used to holiday with my parents so getting away now seems so magical.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

darrardarljod In reply to JimWithNoName [2011-09-16 23:49:42 +0000 UTC]

hopefully our stupidity will be reminders for them not to fuck-up. shopping malls, tanning salons, fast food trash, trash and trash. ughhh. I actually made my BFA thesis about this. How the future will view us. what will be left behind. Will justin beiber be a god? ohh thats sad Jim.
i like to think about objects - random or strange looking objects or even places - try to take my given, common knowledge away from it and wonder what could it be used for? umbrella holders. paper clips. coasters.

stereotypes are funny - and they make great jokes - they can be true - but its just something on the surface. i dont like categories. with science came frames and boxes. i think its very hard to fit what we have been talking about into certain frames and boxes.

if it all goes, then eventually something will come back. something similar perhaps and mutate, adapt to the new environment. create, destroy, create. all in all its beautiful

i couldnt wait to get away when i was younger. So i fled to Europe finally when i was 20. and ive been going back and forth between europe and the US since then. and i guess i always will be- since i've got family here in poland now. i think ive seen more of europe than ive seen of the US. but its getting harder now. less money. older. work. etc...i just love seeing something new. i learn from seeing and experiencing. as a child, i went every year to the same beach with my family. and still when i go home, we go to the same beach. but i guess if youre a farmer (my dad) then something constant where you can relax is nice.

are you from Wales? do you travel much Jim? or do you just have those beautiful places right across the street?

JimWithNoName In reply to darrardarljod [2011-09-17 11:34:25 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, the battle of religion / science..that is such a tough number. Some of my friends are new scientists and we've nearly fallen out, quite literally in conversation over that one haha. I always lost 'coz I hate arguing and my thoughts are slow in that stressed state. I always come up with the right answers later
I have read a few books here and there, not many hehe, and one of them helped me understand the true meaning of that 'religion' word. Sorry, I'm not preaching, just saying of my battle with the subject. It's a personal view I know and one I've personally taken note of, I don't mean to say it's the one everyone should adhere to. Religion to my friends means God, power over people etc and always seems so negative. This author talked of the beginnings of the spiritual mind, perhaps from taking hallucinogens and having a spiritual vision. He then said that religion can be split into 3 parts, personal experience, belief in that experience, and practice of that belief to enforce the original experience. I know I'm whittering on a bit, but I have mandala's in my vision sometimes, powerful thoughts, a strong image of a central point, within ourselves, a positive core, that is then projected outwards like a flower. It's part of my inner healing I guess, is why I'm so taken by it.
But I do think in a funny way that religion and science go together. They are both looking at the same thing but looking at it differently. Emotion can not be weighed I know, nor the wind for that matter, hehe. Some things mankind is not supposed to know and yet we still search for that total understanding and control of everything. This lack of spiritual connection within ourselves, the abandonment of our true inner spirit, the want to shape what is around us, will surely be our demise. With all this 2012 thing going on, I feel mankind is geting to a point where we can no longer dream of leaving this planet for another, we must and probably will return to our core, our earth, as we see the damage we have done there, projected as shit all around us. There is hope. Perhaps we need this change to move into the next dimension. I'm getting deeper... hehe.

I am English, born in England and an only child. My father was in the RAF and so my childhood was nomadic and stressful. My folks split when I was 8 and I moved with my mother to where I am now. She's remarried and I have chosen to stay here, a constant in my life. I never had a holiday with my parents, ever hehe, so when I go away now, even if just across the channel to France, it's a whole new world and very exhilarating for me. The Uk is beautiful like I said, but terribly over crowded! We're such a small island, I fear we may sink

Many of the pictures I have up here are either France or home France is about 4 times the size with the same population. I love it so much there, it's a chilled way of life....and it doesn't rain like here haha

Speak soon, best wishes
