all good thanks, still at it everyday just not uploading. It'll be a 1 year this November looking forward to dumping some studies etc on DA then. I also entered a contest, no where near good enough to win haha but wanted to try and give myself a goal to achieve and it was a whole lot of fun. Looking forward to the new year, wasted a lot of time on trivial things this year.

Such a pity that you are not uploading, but well, I am one to talk I drew much simple stuff last months that will never be uploaded on dA as well.Β
A contest is certainly great for getting inspiration and ideas, so as long as it's fun, it's always nice to participate! I am curious how the contest-pic turned out (will you upload it?). Feel free to share it!

Hey!
I'll be uploading it if it's allowed at the end of the contest, It was the first time doing something properly via a digital medium. It was really hard and draining
trying to use the tablet etc and learning the best way to color for someone without exp, but it came out pretty well for me at least. Hope I get to share it.

17th I believe I'll upload it then. It's nothing amazing though fair warning haha! just happy with it as I've never really done anything digitally before, still prefer drawing on paper etc just feels faster and 90% of the stuff I do are studies so no need to do them digitally. Can't wait to show you anyway, hope you get more stuff up soon, love seeing your work <3

Ok, looking forward to it Β
But yeah, I also prefer drawing on paper. I can draw more accurately there, too.
I will try my best to produce some more upload-worthy stuff, still have some pieces I did not upload so far, so there are at least a few soon Β

;x can't wait to see them, even if you're not happy with some of your pieces, you should still upload them in a scrap folder to look back on and let your follows see your progression <3

Any news on the contest pic?
I mostly do not upload the simple stuff or quick doodles, because it would be way too much work scanning them and I am lazy when it comes to scanning Β

Oh, you watched me!! Β
Thanks, I really appreciate it!Β
I scanned all the more recent stuff (that's worth uploading) and will upload it regularly here on dA. So you can look forward to it Β
I read your journal btw. Unfortunately I don't have any videos to recommend. Still, I got a little curious... what do you exactly mean, when you say, that you don't know where to begin? Begin sketching (Order, what to draw first)? A pose without reference? Or do you just refer to stylizing/simplifyingΒ the body in general?Β

davichiz In reply to Merodi90 [2017-05-26 20:26:48 +0000 UTC]
well for the last couple weeks I've been drawing from reference, life models, focusing on whole images and then other weeks specific parts like the head, shoulder etc. Was just curious if that's the right thing to do or should i focus on a different learning method. I'm trying to be as productive as possible with my time to maximize the amount I can learn. I know I'll get better naturally drawing 5 hours a day etc but I was mostly curious about specific things to focus on to make that time worth it. I'm more into the manga art style of simplifying etc.

Merodi90 In reply to davichiz [2017-05-26 21:11:25 +0000 UTC]
Hmm..I guess that's hard to answer, because everyone learns different.Β
Your method sounds right to me, you are on a good path (unlike me for a long time in the past.). It is important to learn the basics first, get a feel for anatomy.Β
Still, I can only speak of my own experience though... Β I am always someone who only searches for references when needed. For me, it is very important to apply what I learned to really understand it. Just drawing from reference never helped me personally that much.Β
Drawing from scratch, then check what went wrong, check reference, then draw again, helped me a lot more. (If you are not doing that already,...I recommend to give it a try? But you are probably tried/doing it already I assume )Β

'Drawing from scratch, then check what went wrong' I've been doing this over drawing from reference for about 2 weeks now lol! I also figured it'd be a lot better trying and correcting my mistakes than just copying. How long did it take you to grasp anatomy anyway and how did you learn. It goes right over my head sometimes.

Merodi90 In reply to davichiz [2017-05-27 00:16:03 +0000 UTC]
That's good to hear!
Well, I always liked drawing, but for most years I..well..I just drew, without *really* learning. Of course I wanted to improve, but I simply drew, not aiming for professional or anything (unlike now). I sometimes copied, I sometimes took references, but mostly I just did, what I felt was right (from observing I guess). Experimenting mostly, sometimes grasp, what I learned/read from other artists. When I was younger, I read a book "how to draw manga", where you had these simplified anatomy. I tried to apply what was written there, but after this, never learned any anatomy further for many, many years.
There was a time, when I liked to draw portraits from reference (still in my gallery). I learned a little from it. This was the time, when I realized, that I want to change my style. Well, I did, but I still did not really learn, just observed, as always. Its just 6 years ago, that I realized, how important drawing is to me and that I want to reach pro in future.
I started to gather information on different subjects (values, shadows, composition, etc.) and try to learn (drawing with more references (but still used waaaay too less for the first years, where I would have needed it the most), reading on the subjects, drawing lots of poses, tons of illustration-sketches (for composition and values), used to use gesture drawing tools as reference for anatomy and poses, etc.) , but 2013 was the year, when I finally read a book about anatomy and applied it. Rather late, but better late than never!Β
Well...as you can see: Most of the time I used an inefficient learning method (and the old habit is still often there). I learned over time with my own observation, without proper knowledge. I regret it now, but there is nothing I can do. Just do it better now. And... I think you really are on the right path there.
I still struggle tons with digital art and wanted to concentrate on that for now.
Oh - and sorry for the wall of text. I hope I did not bore you too much Β

haha nice read!, thanks for all the information. I have a couple learn manga books myself but haven't got around to using them as I feel i'd get more focusing on the actual human body before trying to over stylize, even if I spend a stupid amount of time trying to draw all manga like lol . Hopefully I'll see myself grow, I'm very impatient which is a problem, I shouldn't be expecting amazing results with just under a year of drawing.
π: 0 β©: 1
Merodi90 In reply to davichiz [2017-05-27 03:04:57 +0000 UTC]
Focusing on the actual human body is a good choice. If you mastered the anatomy, stylizing should be no problem. Still... why don't you start analyzing how artists stylized it (and what the learn manga books suggest) and compare it to the actual anatomy you learned? I guess this would give you quite the insight. (Which parts are exaggerated, which parts are not shown, etc.) Β If you know the difference, you should be able to apply it to your style. Β
But I really have to say... for just learning drawing for under a year you are really skilled! Keep it up. I am sure you will see results if you keep at it like this! (And after one year, compare your first drawing with your newest. You surely will see results. Or draw a picture now, draw it again after one year.)

tyvm! Right now I was thinking of isolating the body piece by piece and spending a good couple days on each part to study the anatomy, I figure exaggerating the muscles will come easier with better understanding of each one.
I really appreciate your feedback and your kind words >.< tysvm! it's so hard to see improvement from your own perspective.
