Denis - I've been an admirer since THE SPACE GAMER back in the early 80s and your work for SJG way back then.  I'm delighted to see you're still producing great new works of art. Seeing your stuff is much like hearing how well a good old friend is doing, so I thank you for that and I thank you for the new stuff as well!

Thank you for the kind words! I've remained in the gaming industry pretty much, until now. Now I'm trying to do art for the gamers themselves, working directly for my fans.

Social media is an uphill battle, but I've got 70 patrons so far. Wish me luck!

O.K. just to harass you... your still my hero.
Well, my hero artistically speaking. You could be a super-villain in real life.

Thank you for the kind words!

Just checked out your page here, looks like you've been busy! :-D

Good work! Oddly, no one has asked me to draw trademarked characters yet. What's up with that?

We have a couple small conventions here in Hawaii.  This year is the first year I've had a table in any.  The trademarked/copyrighted characters at conventions is an interesting issue.  I think it's broadly know to be technically a litigiously possible thing, it seems the major publishers turn a bit of blind eye to it though.... unless it is derogatory to the characters/properties and/or starts making a enough money to be noticeable.  Neither of which I'm doing.  Maybe if the local conventions grow to the point that the "big boys" start coming, then it'll be time to quite.  And certainly if ever get a cease and desist order I'll comply.  I will say, that for me, there's barely any financial incentive.  If I break even I'm happy.  If I'm lucky I'll make enough for nice dinner out with the missus.  But that anyone is willing to pay me at all to do what I'd be doing for free on my own anyway is great, and it's satisfying to get art into the hands of people that really enjoy it.  In the real world I'm a visual information specialist for the Navy, that's what pays the bills for me.

Hey, this may be an out there thought, but would you and Jeff ever consider guesting at a convention?  We have Hoku Kon starting up next year, which is centered around comics, gaming, sci-fi and fantasy.  You guys fall into a couple of those categories. Think it over.  If yes, I can pass you the Hoku Kon point of contact's information.

Again, love the podcast and the art.  Cheers.

What? A convention in beautiful Hawaii! Don't throw me in that briar patch!

That would be awesome! But alas they would have to fly me out, and I doubt I'm a big enough draw for that kind of expense. But thanks for the suggestion, and you might as well send me the contact info because stranger things have happened.

As I understand it, selling one-off drawings of trademarked characters is okay but the moment you stick one in a copying machine is when the lawyers start sharpening their knives. Seeing as there is a big-ass website called www.comicartcommissions.com suggests that the lawyers aren't laying waste indiscriminately.

artildawn In reply to dloubet [2014-12-16 16:01:32 +0000 UTC]

Well the convention is "fledging" so you never know.  And I was taught it never hurts to ask.  If you don't try the answer is always "no".  Again think it over, and even if it's a remote possibility let me know.  I can float the idea by Faisel and Marlon (the convention backers) to see if they'd be interested. And if by chance you guys do come out, we'll have to do a dinner or drinks on me.

I try very hard to stay away from prints, which is one reason I don't make as much as many.  I'm always amazed how ballsy some in the artist alleys are about selling prints.  Attendees are a bit lig magpies, the like shiney, especially if it's cheap; and I obviously can't sell originals as cheaps as prints. Although I am lower than I'd like to be since I'm a veritable unknown.

Keep doing it and you'll be known, as well as improved! Nothing makes you better more than doing it a lot!

That's what Steve Jackson Games did for me. I did art 8 hours a day, and look at me now!

It would be amazingly surreal to be flown out to Hawaii for a convention. So yeah, don't hesitate to mention us to the backers! Sort of a "Whatever you want me to do, I'll do it!" situation for me.

Got it! Thanks!

Jeff gave me a stern talking to, saying it's not for me to say who is a sufficient draw for a Hawaiian convention!

I think you underestimate your influence.  Between your Ultima Work and Jeff's D&D work you have lot of fans.  Granted they may not know the names or the faces but they know the work.

Anyway, I hope you guys can work something out.  Would love to met both of you in person.  For the podcast and the art

Thank you for posting some of this unreleased work here, sir; your art was such an important part of the Ultima series — the images in the manuals gave life to the pixel stick-figures in the game! Would love to see updates on what you're working on these days, too...!

I still have my original ultima VI manual.

Thanks for sharing your work with us and giving as all so many great
memories and experiences.

Sorry for the delay in response.

Frank Frazetta was my idol, and I can even narrow it down to what painting of his made me want to be an artist.

It's humbling to know that my work can have a similar effect. Thanks!

Truly, your artwork is what made me start paying attention
and really wondering about the work that artists put into
manuals and gameboxes.

Sorry to pour it on so thick, but the 11 year old me never
thought I'd actually be communicating and sharing webspace
with -the- Ultima artist.

I don't think I ever did a drawing of Chuckles. Oddly enough, I am sub-contracting an art job right now with the person Chuckles was based on.

How's that for bizarre?
