Thanks for the llama

I knew a llama once. At least I thought I knew him. I mean, how well can anyone really know anyone, much less a llama. With their air of mystery and thinly veiled contempt. It’s hard. But I digress.

His name was Kevin. But for reasons I will never understand, he would only ever answer to Albert. Identity issues aside, things started out okay. The usual introductory sniffing and sneezing went well, despite his allergies, but then things started going downhill during the ritual licking phase of the pleasantries. We pushed through. And had it not been for the spitting, we might have even been able to make it work, but alas, after just 3 seconds of bittersweet brotherhood, we finally decided to part ways. It’s kind of sad, when you think about it. Spitting seems like such an innocent thing to fight over, but he was pretty adamant that I should stop and that was just never going to happen. We might have overcome that issue, but Kevin, like all llamas, was very competitive. First came the stench competitions. Then it was belching contests. And lastly, a painstaking count to see which one was hairier. You can clearly see why our relationship was doomed. The poor fellow was a bit of a sore loser.

So he snuck out, taking with him a failed friendship, an obliviously optimistic dread of the future, and my sixth favorite toothbrush. Now that he is gone, I can honestly say, it's for the best. He was too much of a chick magnet anyway and who needs that poultry drama?

Full disclaimer, as Kevin’s official biographer, a position of which he blackmailed me into (don’t ask), I’ve been instructed to inform you about his ongoing series. The journey starts here with  The Kevin Chronicles - Chapter 1, and  this gallery contains the rest. You should check it out.

*End of cue card*

And don't worry, they're pretty short.

No pressure though, only if you want.

Sorry about the late reply. Working on the backlog.

As far as WoW books go, I'd recommend Cycle of Hatred by deCandido (which is a lot about contrasting Orc and Human societies), Rise of the Horde by Golden (which is about how the Orcs moved away from their peaceful clan-based society to form the demonic Horde) and maybe Lord of the Clans by Golden (which is about the Orcs escaping from human imprisonment). Tides of Darkness features the orcs but is mostly about the humans (it's about the events that lead up to the orcs being imprisoned in the first place - so the orcs get portrayed in very much a "marauding horde" light). The Shattering is okay but it's very much focussed on Azeroth as a whole rather than just the orcs, and the orcs that do get focussed on are quite atypical (Thrall, who was raised by humans; Garrosh, who was raised in cultural isolation; and Aggra, who was raised in a throwback society), so I imagine could be quite disorientating if you haven't played the game.

In story-chronological order, they go Rise of the Horde --> Tides of Darkness --> Lord of the Clans --> Cycle of Hatred --> The Shattering.

Some warnings: don't expect miracles on the point of plot; remember it's a franchise aimed at 12-year-olds and full of committee decisions. Remember the books are basically contracted fanfiction. Golden used to write Klingon fiction, so she was the right choice for it; but you can tell, for example, that she wrote Lord of the Clans many many years before Rise of the Horde (which is my favourite book because it has my favourite characters in it; they get killed off at the start of Lord of the Clans), and has a much firmer grasp of the whole thing by the time she gets 'round to RotH. You can also tell that LotC was written as a replacement for a cancelled adventure game, so the plot feels a bit "and then this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened".

And another thing. Avoid Richard Knaak's books, because they - apart from not having orcs in aside from cameos - are full of terrible, predictable plotlines, Mary Sues and Author Surrogates - and not even in the so-bad-it's-good Mercedes Lackey way. I actually nearly cried with laughter at the plot climax of one of his mangas, because the "plot-twist" was one step further along the cliché scale than "the peasant girl is actually a princess" - and was so heavily foreshadowed that the entire thing was basically just a shadow-puppet show.

But, yes, I'm like you: I remember the ghoul soooo much, but I can't remember where it's from.
