now's the time for an uninvited suggestion: perhaps you should collect all your haiku poems into a single deviation and number them for separation. my desire to read them all is losing its war with indolence. what do you think?

MusicalAlchemy [2010-03-24 23:36:44 +0000 UTC]

Forgive me for adding some of your poetry to my favourites with no comments. When something can be improved, i can offer criticism or words of help, but with your work there is none of that. I can only thank you for writing them, for putting my own thoughts and feelings into your words.

Thank you.

I hope you labor in obscurity less as a performing poet than you do as a DA poet, because your popularity here relative to your body of work is completely the fuck out of whack. Congratulations on the DD; hopefully it brings you attention somewhat more commensurate with your abilities. You've got mine now, at any rate.

I slam regularly in Arizona, have been to the National Poetry Slam on four different teams since 2001, and host a biweekly open mic in Sedona. I've been published a few times in local poetry anthologies. I write far more often than it seems; I only post to DA when I remember to although I should more often.
I do well enough for a small-town slam poet with a full-time job. I'm only 30, so we'll see how my popularity fares when I hit 75.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

foxthepoet In reply to inziladun [2006-11-05 01:47:19 +0000 UTC]

Sorry about not replying. I'm shy and I have an older view on communication I guess, I prefer face-to-face meetings, so I'm terrible with replying to e-mail, phone calls, and online postings. I have a MySpace account too, and while I post on it, I probably only reply to one out of ten posts. I just feel that culturally there's too much of a need to communicate right now, with the state of the world, an my priorities are more toward people I can see and touch. I wish I had the time to reply to everyone in the electronic world as personally as I do in the flesh world, but it's all rather overwhelming. Additionally, I dislike the phone and instant messages because I can't see one's reactions or face, despite hearing their voice, and in the electronic world, waiting for a reply back is irksome. I actually prefer physical letters, and have a massive collection of postcards that I send out periodically, because their is some intimacy in the emotion of the writer than can be seen in paper and ink

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

inziladun In reply to foxthepoet [2006-11-05 13:02:54 +0000 UTC]

I can see just what you mean, it's not a problem. but it's funny you should call yourself shy only to say that you prefer face-to-face contact; the brand of shiness I've been victim to is one that has made me even prefer 'non-realtime' communication to personal contact (with all its sociological fears/anxieties/&c that exist dilutedly in cyberia). and written discussion has the advantage of thoroughness, you can sit & consider what you're about to say for longer than you can when speaking with someone. there's also a real shortage of english-language writers where I'm from, so the opportunity for face-to-face discussion hasn't even arisen for me -- hence the next best thing.

intimacy is vital, I agree with you.
keep on truckin' CFG

Given your location, I can see the appeal of online talk. In the same circumstance, I'd be equally devout.
Sedona, Ariz., is a small town, despite having 4 million tourists a year pass through, so going anywhere means I'll likely see someone I know. I'll make small talk if someone approaches me, but for the most part, I'd rather stay somewhat anonymous, even if I'm in a room where I know everyone's name. So, in that respect, I suppose I'm shy. Strangers I usually avoid unless introduced and acquaintances I speak with if I find them entertaining. With friends, it's as if no one else exists in the room and I'm make a beeline toward them. But, much to the humor of my friends, no one has more than one minute phone conversation with me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

inziladun In reply to foxthepoet [2006-11-05 22:09:30 +0000 UTC]

I guess I wasn't entirely accurate earlier; I'm not shy, I'm self-centeredly pessimistic. I fear contact before it occurs; I assume I'll be thought of as lacking in some way by whomever I'm about to meet or talk to. contact itself, once I can't get out of it, is something I usually enjoy, assuming the person I'm talking to isn't a bozo or a jerk. when I speak with someone agreeable my self-esteem gets a kick of adrenaline. I've sometimes thought of it as a paradox of sorts, but maybe it isn't. sociology can get bizarre.

look at this, we're having a fine discussion and we've never even met!

HIT ME RUNNING

Don’t sell me funeral plots
on late night television
if the end is already in sight

am I supposed to pull the sheets up to my neck,
count to zero,
smile, and cease?

no

keep your pills, in all their pretty colors:
celebrex, propecia, allegra, lipitor, zanex, viagra
keep them for scrabble
keep your rogaine, your facelifts
keep your death insurance
keep your graveyard reservations

hit me running.

let me go down swinging

make it a sport:

give me a ten-minute head start
and an obstacle course.

place a beautiful girl on the far side of a mine field
and whisper, β€œshe wants to kiss you”

target me on my feet
dodging doomsday’s in slow-mo bullet time

let me duel the grim reaper in a poetry slam

but let me lay where i fall
let the buzzards and coyotes
pick apart my bones
don’t stuff me and sew me up
waste my estate on alcohol for my wake
not formaldehyde
instead of wood for a coffin,
build me a funeral pyre
and set me ablaze like a pagan-warrior-king
sing songs,
roast marshmallows,
get drunk,
and recite your poetry
by the time we’re done
the grim reaper will beg for a vacation

i don’t have to win,
but let me believe I have a chance at immortality
even if the probability is one a billion.
those are good odds
if I’m the one

those who believe in death will die first

if I believe I’m going to live forever,
if I believe I can fly
I just might

so from the chickens before me,
sucking in their pot-bellies,
grooming their comb-overs,
I’ll craft wings from their plucked feathers
reach cruising altitude alongside Icarus
but outrace the sun

light doesn’t have the speed to catch me

these lungs won’t stop breathing,
these cells will break open replacements
this heart will beat out of sheer will
to last longer than timex or twinkies
and endure eternity
just to see how this story ends
and whether
the hero gets the girl
or a bullet to the brain

I will hold onto immortality
by my fingernails and the skin of my teeth
past the all epochs and ages and armageddons
so I can see if the end
begins the beginning all over again
or does the whole thing backwards
or upside down with inverted colors
or just stops
like in the Twilight Zone,
one second before the apocalypse

but my bet is that i
will finally sober up
take my medication
set the alarm
roll over
and turn the television off
